John Carmack expresses optimism and concern over Facebook/Oculus deal

Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack has spoken out about Facebook's acquisition of Oculus VR. The former id studio founder addressed the 'self-focused' and 'short-sighted' concerns raised following the sale, while also speaking out about his own concerns. His main one being that the sale takes away from what Oculus could have ultimately become as a standalone company, while also sending a message that startup tech companies will aim for the goal of acquisition over innovation.

Facebook launches Mobile Games Publishing program

Yet another heavyweight is throwing its hat in the mobile games publishing ring. Facebook's 'Mobile Games Publishing' initiative is exactly what it sounds like.

Unlike many publishers, Facebook will work simply as a distributor, promoting partnered games "across a variety of channels." The company will not finance games, nor will it play an "active role" in development. "This is about promotion and finding audiences," Facebook's Dan Morris explained.

Report: Social games popularity shrinking

Social games participation dropped sharply recently, according to market analysts. One research firm claims that 10 million fewer people played social games in March than the months prior, a 5% drop. That resulted in the total estimated number of active social network gamers dipping below 200 million for the first time in more than a year.

SimCity Social, The Sims Social and Pet Society shutting down

SimCity Social, The Sims Social and Pet Society shutting down

"Say, that FarmVille certainly is popular," executives the industry over observed, "Let's make one of those too." And so innumerable copies of Zynga's social games (which, while perhaps not original, refined and re-marketed what came before) flooded Facebook and pocket telephones. Then they didn't do so well and many were shut down. And that's just what EA will do to SimCity Social, The Sims Social, and Pet Society in June.

Microsoft 'retiring' Xbox 360 Twitter and Facebook apps

You probably don't use the Twitter and Facebook apps on the Xbox 360 dashboard, what with having computers and netbooks and tablets and pocket telephones, but Microsoft has bad news for those few who do. It's "retiring" the apps, which is a kind way to say scrapping, and suggests you use the new dashboard Internet Explorer 9 app instead.

Zynga hits Electronic Arts with counterclaim

A little over a month ago, publishing giant Electronic Arts sued social gaming giant Zynga over alleged copyright infringement. EA claims that Zynga had blatantly copied various elements of The Sims Social in The Ville, one of Zynga's recent releases.

Of course, Zynga denies those allegations, claiming they "have no merit." In a prepared statement to Shacknews, Reggie Davis, general counsel for Zynga, claims that EA is guilty of "anticompetitive and unlawful business practices," for which the company has filed a counterclaim.

FarmVille 2 launches on Zynga.com and Facebook today

The game that really put Zynga on the map has returned. Three years after the original, FarmVille 2 has launched. Like it's predecessor, it invites Facebook and Zynga.com players to cultivate their own farms, all whilst getting support from friends. However, FarmVille 2 also marks the first of Zynga's "next generation" game offerings: it's the first Zynga game to be built entirely in 3D, the first to run in Adobe Flash Player 11, and the first to offer a right-click option.
