"You've got Wang." These are the words that greeted me at the start of the closed E3 demo for Shadow Warrior. Right there, I had a feeling that Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hog's reboot of the 1998 original understood the essence of what made it such a cult classic.
If you're not a PC gamer of advanced years, the fuss about the new Shadow Warrior may be a mystery to you. To get newcomers all jazzed up about it and, ah, motivated by an unfortunate security hole, publisher Devolver Digital is giving away 3D Realms' original 1997 FPS for free forever on Steam.
Devolver Digital surprised many with their announcement that they'd be reviving the long-dormant Shadow Warrior franchise. After all, it wasn't the most fondly remembered game, as the 1997 first-person action game was more recognized for racist caricatures and outdated stereotypes. However, Devolver and Hard Reset developer Flying Wild Hog says that their reboot will be a complete reinvention and will start with a clean slate.
"The teams at Flying Wild Hog and Devolver Digital were big fans of the original game," said Devolver Digital's Nigel Lowrie. "It brought some great gameplay innovations and a really unique setting and aesthetic to shooters. We think it would be incredible to reinvent the Shadow Warrior world in a modern arcade-style shooter with some new combat innovations of our own that expand upon what was started in the original game."
The announcement of Shadow Warrior was a pretty low-key affair, really just a teaser site and a short blurb. Today's the big day Hard Reset developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Devolver Digital finally lifted the wraps off their "total reimagining" of 3D Realms' classic FPS of the same name and, well, they don't reveal much but it's certainly looking pretty.
The 1997 game Shadow Warrior is primed for a comeback. Flying Wild Hog, developer of Hard Reset, announced the project and an official site shows a teaser image. Hotline Miami publisher Devolver Digital will be releasing the game.

Though Serious Sam 3 launched on PC last November, Croteam was curiously silent about its crazy FPS's promised console editions until yesterday. It'll arrive on Xbox Live Arcade this fall alongside a revamped version of indie tie-in Serious Sam Double D, but there's still no word on PS3 releases.

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter is getting another dose of downloadable content, set to hit on May 15. The "Legend of the Beast" DLC packs in three campaign missions, three survival mode maps, and three versus mode maps, for $4.99.
Apple may like to brand itself as the classier alternative to PC--but that's going to change once Serious Sam 3 makes its way to the Mac on April 23rd. It'll be the first time Serious Sam and the headless screaming minions he fights will grace OS X.
Earlier this week, it was discovered that pirated versions of developer Croteam's recently released shooter Serious Sam 3: BFE 'features' a special guest-star hellbent on player destruction.
Pirated versions of the game include an immortal pinkish scorpion, dashing toward Sam intent on halting his progress. A Croteam representative confirmed to Shacknews that the enemy was included as a form of hilarious DRM to combat piracy. Sure, it will probably be cracked shortly, but it's a nice reminder that you shouldn't be illegally downloading games if you want to enjoy them immediately.
Before making his official comeback in Serious Sam 3: BFE, developer Vlambeer takes Sam Stone into some uncharted territory in Serious Sam: The Random Encounter. The opening narration sets Sam up for a trip into the future, where combat takes the form of turn-based RPG battles.
Good things come to those who wait, mostly, and now we'll have to wait a little longer for Serious Sam 3: BFE so it can be a little better. Croteam's manic FPS has been delayed from October 18 to November 22 on PC, the Croatian developer announced today.
"Looks like there'll still be cringes when playing this. I like Hard Reset, can only hope for ..."
