Halo 4 Forge preview: building traits

Halo 4 Forge preview: building traits

Halo 4 brings back a fan-favorite mode: Forge. This time around, the mode will feature three exclusive maps, each offering some much-need variety. Ravine is a lush green environment, similar in appearance to Halo 3's Valhalla. Erosion is a cavernous area located within a desert terrain, and Impact is set in an abandoned area in deep space filled with asteroids, craters, and UNSC facilities.

Dynamic lighting is a new addition to Forge that helps create a greater sense of immersion. Objects that are placed in outdoor areas will create realistic shadow effects. Shadows will appear in real-time through the map's natural light sources and also from the various artificial light pieces available.

Halo 4's Forge mode to include multiple environments

Halo 4's Forge mode to include multiple environments

Halo 4's Forge mode is getting some serious upgrades. Community manager Jessica Shea has outlined some more of the features and improvements we can expect from this new version of the popular map editor.

For one thing, this Forge mode will actually let you chose from various environments based on the main game. "The difference is that we'll use more than one environment - an aesthetic - rather than a giant contiguous space like Forge World," Shea said.

Certain Affinity making Halo 4 Forge mode

343 Industries has been cagey about a Forge mode in Halo 4, but it would be shocking if the next numbered installment lacked the popular feature. As it turns out, the mode is in development from Certain Affinity, the studio behind Crimson Alliance and various Halo map packs.

Field Report: Halo Anniversary

Field Report: Halo Anniversary

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary straddles the line between preservation and reinvention, and does so with awkward balance. As promised, the game is a nostalgic look at the original game with a slick coat of paint placed atop the original engine. But, something is lost in translation. The peril I felt throughout the original campaign has dissipated. Maybe it's the game's aggressive visual makeover? Or maybe it's because I've seen the beginning and end of this story, I'm not as engrossed as I once was.

Perhaps it's something else. After all, nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Crimson Alliance announced for XBLA

Crimson Alliance announced for XBLA

Developer Certain Affinity announced a new game today, titled Crimson Alliance. The co-op action/RPG hybrid is due this summer on Xbox Live Arcade, but we haven't seen much so far other a logo and artwork on the game's official page.

According to the announcement, you'll pick from three classes: Assassin, Wizard, or Mercenary. Each has five special abilities to upgrade, so picking your own path through the skill tree lets you customize your character a bit. You can also join with up to three friends offline or through Xbox Live, which allows for combo attacks. Read more »

First Plunder Media Unveiled, PC Version Revealed

Capcom has released first batch of screenshots of Certain Affinity's Plunder (PC, PS3, X360), in addition to a set of concept art for the downloadable pirate-themed strategy title.

A action-based real-time strategy game, Plunder represents the first original work from studio Certain Affinity, founded by ex-Bungie staffer Max Hoberman. The game is said to draw heavily from Bungie's long-running joke of a game entitled Pimps at Sea. Read more »
