Assassin's Creed 4 review: high seas, high thrills

Assassin's Creed 4 review: high seas, high thrills

After the disappointment of Assassin's Creed 3, I was nearly ready to write off the franchise. Ubisoft's open-world foray into the American Revolution was too unfocused and too unpolished. Certainly, a one-year turnaround for Black Flag—the next fully-numbered entry in the series—wouldn't be enough to move the series forward. Or, so I thought.

Black Flag improves upon nearly every aspect of Assassin's Creed 3, largely by focusing on a grand mission statement: be a great pirate game. Although you engage in a multitude of activities—from hunting wild animals, to diving for treasure, to assassinating—they all work towards the goal of furthering your pirating ways.

Assassin's Creed 4 modern day offers up to 5 hours of gameplay

Assassin's Creed 4 modern day offers up to 5 hours of gameplay

The modern-day storyline of Assassin's Creed 4 has you playing as an employee of Abstergo Entertainment. It's content that Ubisoft has described as "optional." However, if you do want to rummage in the present, what will you discover?

Game director Ashraf Ismail explained that "in total, if you were to do everything in the present day--find everything, hack every computer, access every room--it's a solid three to five hours." However, all players will be required to play in the modern day for about 20-25 minutes, Ismail admitted, proving that Ubisoft doesn't quite understand what the word "optional" means.

Assassin's Creed 4: Freedom Cry trailer shows off single-player DLC

Assassin's Creed 4: Freedom Cry trailer shows off single-player DLC

The hard-working folks at Ubisoft manage not only to create a brand new Assassin's Creed every year, but a Season Pass as well. This year's collection of add-ons stars Adewale, a pirate that manages to become Edward Kenway's second-in-command. In this new three-hour single-player adventure dubbed "Freedom Cry," Adewale is on a journey to free slaves.

The pack will cost $20, a "20% savings" over buying each item separately. In addition to the new story, the Season Pass will include an exclusive Kraken Ship, and new characters for use in the multiplayer mode.

Assassin's Creed 4 lead designer explains PC delays

Assassin's Creed 4 lead designer explains PC delays

Ubisoft announced earlier this week that Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag would set sail on PC on November 19. It's not the first time the series has featured a later PC release and it's almost come to be expected by now. AC4 lead designer Jean-Sebastien Decant explains the delays, saying it's a matter of perfecting the console version first.

Assassin's Creed 4's companion app detailed

Assassin's Creed 4's companion app detailed

As we previously reported, Assassin's Creed 4 will launch with a companion app for touch devices. And this is what it looks like. By Ubisoft's admission, it's "straightforward," with its main purpose being an interactive map. While it may not offer the neat cross-platform multiplayer of Watch Dogs, it's still a rather useful tool, especially as you can set waypoints via tablet that appear in the game in real-time.

"There are a lot of these small comfort tools where instead of having to go into a menu you can just have it next to you and do stuff really easily," game director Ashraf Ismail said. "Or you can have someone else do it for you. It's kind of like your first mate next to you."
