AMD's liquid-cooled Radeon R9 295X2 promises more power than GTX Titan Z--at half the cost

Ah, the PC GPU wars are strong once again. Just two weeks after NVIDIA revealed their GeForce GTX Titan Z, AMD has countered with their own solution. The Radeon R9 295X2 is similar to the Titan Z, joining two of the company's fastest cards into a single design. However, AMD says it has one-upped the competition in terms of raw power and price.

The R9 295X2 comes equipped with a pre-assembled "maintenance-free" liquid cooling system co-developed with Asetek, promising "quiet operation and consistent performance" from the card.

AMD expects 'performance advantage' on PC due to console partnerships

AMD has managed to become the chips supplier for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Because of this unique position, AMD VP Matt Skynner believes his company will have the edge when it comes to PC gaming. "Because it's our architecture there, it's easier to port the games. And because they're first developed on our hardware, there should be a performance advantage," he said. "They should run better on our hardware."

AMD: Frostbite 3 partnership won't 'prevent our competition from optimizing' pre-release

AMD: Frostbite 3 partnership won't 'prevent our competition from optimizing' pre-release

Following a report that Frostbite 3 games would be "optimized exclusively" for AMD cards, both EA and AMD have clarified the details of their partnership.

"It makes sense that game developers would focus on AMD hardware with AMD hardware being the backbone of the next console generation," a representative for AMD said. As previously noted, AMD has chips in both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. However, AMD points out that their deal does not affect all forthcoming Frostbite games. "At this time, though, our relationship with DICE and EA is exclusively focused on Battlefield 4 and its performance optimizations for AMD CPUs, GPUs and APUs.

Report: Frostbite 3 games to be 'optimized exclusively' for AMD cards

Starting with Battlefield 4, all games using Frostbite 3 will be "optimized exclusively" for AMD cards, IGN reports. Given that Frostbite 3 has become EA's engine of choice for its upcoming slate of games, this could be a significant blow to rival graphics card manufacturer Nvidia.

According to their report, "while Nvidia-based systems will be supported, the company won't be able to develop and distribute updated drivers until after each game is released."

Report: Orbis (PS4) to use eight-core AMD CPU, Radeon GPU

Details surrounding the next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, have reportedly leaked. The technically minded and reputable Digital Foundry claims that the "PS4" will have an eight-core AMD CPU, running at 1.6GHz, and a custom Radeon GPU, with 18 compute units at 800MHz. This matches with earlier rumors that Sony was partnering with AMD for its next-gen system, thereby losing backwards-compatibility with PS3.

Report: 1.7M Steam keys for Dirt 3 compromised

A Codemasters/AMD promotion which awarded new video card purchases with a free code for Dirt 3 was compromised over the weekend. Although this sort of promotion isn't unusual, the promotional codes were apparently stored on an unsecured webserver, meaning that for the past few days, anyone who found the address could view (and pilfer) them.

Computer hardware manufacturer AMD will eliminate 1,100 jobs and temporarily reduce pay for all remaining employees, reports the Associated Press.

It's the third round of layoffs for AMD in under a year, as it cut 600 jobs in December and an additional 1,600 positions earlier in 2008. The company is also in the process of spinning off its manufacturing operations, which will relocate 3,000 workers. Read more »

Related Topics – Electronic Arts, PC, AMD

During a presentation at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, computer hardware manufacturer AMD and middleware developer OTOY unveiled plans for a new supercomputer they believe will revolutionize entertainment.

By calculating all relevant data sever-side and then streaming the results to online devices, AMD claims the platform can bring video games and other "graphically-intensive applications" to "virtually any type of mobile device with a web browser without making the device rapidly deplete battery life or struggle to process the content." AMD Unveils Cinema 2.0 Rendering Technology, Photo-realistic Humans Run in Real-time

Related Topics – Blizzard, AMD

During a recent press event, AMD introduced a new rendering technology capable of producing photo-realistic humans, as a handful of game developers lined up behind the hardware manufacturer.

Dubbed Cinema 2.0, the technology is capable of producing photo-realistic characters (pictured left) by capturing human facial data using a rig that consists of a "globe-shaped room" ringed with high-definition cameras, according to Joystiq. The digital character was then shown running in real-time, with realistic lighting and special effects. Read more »
