A few weeks ago I chanced across invedit. It allows you to edit your inventory - what you have, how much, and what the damage value to tools and armor is. Even if you don't use it to obtain free stuff, you can use it to edit the damage values for your tools and armor. Set the value to a negative number and tools last longer. Negative damage armor makes you effectively invulnerable. Minimum value is -32657.

I've been using it for ~ 3 weeks now. It's not for everyone and I do feel a bit guilty about using it. Then I reset the damage values on my tools and armor and feel better.
