It doesn't even have to be that Valve is going out of business - some patent troll jackass could just claim that they're infringing on something with Steam and a court injunction could shut the whole thing down, pending a trial.
That being said I love Steam and I buy a ton of shit from it and there's a whole bunch of smart people at Valve who work very hard to keep it going, both technically and logistically/legally so I don't doubt there is something resembling a plan and solid business logic behind not letting the public know what it is. But to say that Steam is infallible is naive.
