I think that problem (+ the rubberbanding on certain stairs) is a side effect of his auto-orientation code. Seems to me that the most glitchy stairs are the ones that have some ambiguity about which direction they are supposed to be facing, and there is some sort of 'desync' which means that the stair looks like it's facing one way, but wants to be facing another, then you get all these weird glitchy issues.
