So I was playing some single player last night. At this point I'm pretty well set up: got myself a little shack, a branch mine starting at bedrock, a farm, that sort of thing. Monsters aren't a problem: I'll wander out at night with nary but my diamond sword to protect me, and I never -- and I mean never -- have any randomly spawn in my work areas because I light them well. I'm pretty much unafraid of the lame monsters in the game, even though I'm playing on Hard.
Oh how that changed last night.
I went in search of a natural cave, because I wanted to find some lava (I wanted to determine if the infinite lava trick works in SP as well). So I picked a spot about 15 blocks up from bedrock, and I just mined in one direction. And mined. And mined. And mined. Finally I hear water above me. And then groaning.
Soon enough I break into the natural cave, and it's a doozie. Massive place, with winding tunnels that suddenly branch upward far enough that they seem like they should break the surface. I find my lava, and I also find a branch that has mobs fucking pouring out of it. Like, once you pass a certain bottleneck, it's a monster mosh pit with the works -- skeletons mostly, but zombies, spiders and creepers too. I figure there's a spawner somewhere in there, so I retreat to a crafting table, make myself a full set of iron armour (branch mining ftw) and return. Stupidly, I still have all my diamond tools on me, because I'm a cocky arrogant bastard at this point.
I get back to near the monster mosh pit and I'm cautiously taking a bunch of the mobs out with the box and arrow. They keep coming. They're spawning from multiple locations it seems, and I can't find all the holes in the dam so that I can block them. I've killed at least ten mobs when finally, out of arrows and with my diamond sword in hand, I venture through the bottleneck and find that it opens into a large chamber, with a pretzel-like series of forks and dead ends. And there's moaning, hissing and clanking coming from fucking everywhere. Almost instantly I'm blindsided by two skeleton archers while I'm trying to place a torch, I step in lava trying to dodge arrows, holy shit there's a spider, then a creeper appears in my peripheral vision and... BLAM.
I'm not losing my diamond tools and all the lava I found, so I craft myself a stone sword and run back down the mine. I get my shit and die again, twice, taking a few more mobs with me each time I go. Surely there's an end to this. Finally I manage to run in, grab my stuff, then drag my bleeding ass out to a safe spot. I drop all my unnecessary gear in a chest. I must have killed about 20 mobs at this point, and my plate armor is in spaghetti-like tatters wisping off my shoulders. I steel myself, eat some pork, and go back in again. I find an expansive chamber, with a cathedral-like roof... and a skeleton spawner in a pit. Jackpot! 2 skeletons and a creeper await me -- I dodge the skeleton's fire while trying to climbing down towards the spawner (with an eye on destroying it), but the creeper gets too close. BLAM, I'm thrown out of the pit and I barely survive. But he's taken out the spawner, and the two skeletons too!
That's where I packed it in for the night. I'm still kind of scared to go back in there -- I think there might be another spawner in there because there's still a LOT of mobs. The moaning, it haunts my sleep...
