but when i finally finished my cabin by nightfall and sat inside crafting while monsters tried to get in, it felt as good as anything in gaming.
i made a shitty plank castle with a second-story deck. then i started mining. i found one of those natural caves you guys talk about but it took probably 400 stone digs to get there.
questions: why don't i ever get in-game music? maybe five minutes every hour i'll hear a song. can i put my own MP3 tracks in there? also are there ever plans to have mouse-over information about items? i didn't know the difference between types of stone without looking up the wiki.

It's fun and you want to build that sky walk over to your wheat farm or dock, whatever. The occasional death is fun, exciting.
It's not fun needing thousands of specific materials in an incredibly more hostile environment to build simple things with.
I've got 3,000 units of rail, 2,000 units of glass, all that was farmed on Survival Hard and I worked very hard to protect my mines and make return spelunking journeys to my corpse quicker. I do not need light sources that regularly fail over my huge network of defenses and travel routes to add to the excitement.
