They should have stuck with simple revealing and compelling flashbacks of the main characters (no Faraway, Miles, sexy redhead, young Danielle, and several throwaway groups of characters, etc.) and created a more interesting main arch for our survivors on the island. After season 3 it became musical camps, flash-whatever, arbitrary quests and the standard Lost shock/twist beat before every commercial, end of every show/season, but without the genius of seasons 1 and 2.
I think after Charlie died they could have used one more season (2 at the most ~ 4 seasons total, max) to wrap things up and be done with it, no flash forwards or teasing the audience, stick with what was working.
I also think Dharma didn't turn out nearly as mysterious of Terry Gilliam-strange it was promising to be when you first saw that film reel in the hatch. Dharma needed to be doing some stranger stuff, the mysteries of the island could have been a bit more twisted or something.
