First I need to shout out some thanks, even though they may not be seen by those being thanked. I need to do this. All too often, threads about DNF derail into threads about me, which is confusing to front-pagers at best, and quite unfair to those who actually worked hard on this game at worst. Instead of being happy for me, which is appreciated, let's be happy for these people and many unnamed developers.
sTeve Gibson: You, Sir, are a gentleman's gentleman. I know I've been a nuisance at times and I'm not happy about that and you have treated me far far better than I deserve. I owe you big time and I am grateful to you for many many things, today being one of them. I am honored and flattered and humbled to have been invited. I am elated to see you successful and happy; you have earned it. Thank you for The Shack by the way. A lot of us call it our home and many of us have made family out of this community you created. It is nice here. Today has been a very good day.
Randy Pitchford: As pandastrong noted in an earlier thread today, you seem very passionate about the game. I've followed the story of Duke as closely as possible, so I didn't really learn anything new from what you told us today, except I did learn that Duke is in good hands. It's going to be OK. I learned this today. This is the best news, I think. This means a lot; it is important. Thank you for having us there. Your trust and hospitality was even better than the pizza and beer provided. And, I think you saved Duke Nukem Forever. That's kind of big, you know?
I became a fan of yours today.
GeorgeB3DR: You have taken far more abuse here than most others would have put up with, yet you return, to contribute to the community, whether it be offering advice in a relationship thread to giving away free XBLA Duke3D codes or telling us what other dev's new game fucking rules. This game has been your baby, and as far as I'm concerned it always will be. You have taken heat for some of your decisions, but I know that those decisions were *always* made because of what you felt would be the best for the game, and for us as gamers. You have quite likely turned away trainloads of cash at times because you wanted to make the best damn game you could. I may have let it go for a spell, but that was because of Take 2, not because of you. I have always trusted you, and I WAS RIGHT. I WAS FUCKING RIGHT!!! I don't get to say that very often, and god damn it feels good. I'm going to say it again. I always trusted you, George, and I WAS FUCKING RIGHT.
IT 0WNS.
Allen Blum: I would imagine you are quite pleased. I wouldn't blame you in the least. Thank you.
Let's talk about the game for a bit, shall we?
We signed NDAs, but that was, as RomSteady suggested in an earlier thread, in case we saw assets for unannounced game X, Y, or Z while there. I don't have anything to report, and I don't have anything to hide. I confess that I was there to see Duke, and wasn't really paying proper attention to anything else around me.
First, Randy Pitchford gave us an animated and excited rundown on events leading up to Gearbox working on the game. As I said, nothing I didn't already know, really, from following events in the gaming press, but this man knows Duke and has been a fan of Duke since back in the day when he worked at 3DR. He has respect for Duke and for the original vision of the game and he has talent who came from 3DR and he has the resources to make good things happen.
Then, shades were drawn (automatic ones -- neato!) and lights were turned off and the PAX trailer was shown. It had big shoes to fill, what with most of us having the standard set by the absolutely stellar 2001 E3 video, and while others with me felt that it exceeded that one, I was quite happy to rate it as being just as good as that one. Footage was exciting, Jon St. John was in FINE form, Duke was Duke, and the choice of music surprised me but it worked, it worked well. I wanted to see it again. I still want to.
Then we got to play the game! omg omg omg omg omg I waited for this for thirteen years omg oh holy shit omg.
I must, in fairness and full disclosure, confess that I went in to Gearbox today fully expecting to like what I saw. There were no question marks in my head. All I was expecting was Duke Nukem, some one liners, some juvenile raunchy humor, guns, PigCops, and explosions. That's really all I needed. And you know what? That's exactly what I got!
I hadn't slept well the night before and had a tension headache and missed an earlier job fair that I had wanted to attend and was worried that this would dampen my enthusiasm and actually considered passing on the actual gameplay, but as soon as it started, all my concerns went away. I felt just fine.
I played for probably 20 minutes, and in that time I offed a giant monster with a powerful Devastator, interacted with my environment, raced around in a car, got in a gunfight with PigCops while armed with a laser sight pistol, and blew some shit up with a nifty railgun. I did not get to use the shotgun (rumored to be awesome) and that's fine, I want the full version to hold some surprises. I know it's going to be quality. Did I mention the badass Devastator? Who cares about two weapons at a time! There is a fucking DEVASTATOR.
it is a good game that will probably have no boring parts and it is going to be fun. Doesn't sound like such a glowing review, does it? "It's a good game." No "paradigm shift" in that sentence. But you know what? It is a good DUKE NUKEM game and THAT makes ALL the difference. THAT fucking 0WNS. That's all I fucking wanted. We are getting that, and lots of it. I got chills.
It looks great!!! It looks better than I expected it to. I didn't see anything "dated" about it. I would have been fine with dated, trust me on this, I am there to kick ass and chew gum and I don't need pixelvoxeltexellated gouradphongdipthong formula X architecture with kaleidoscopic dual pass bit shaders, just give me a gun and some explosions please. But it looks GREAT!
My "Holy fucking shit" comments in an earlier thread stand. It's that good.
They gave us little Gearbox swag bags to take with us on our way out.
I saw Maarten! EricZBA gave me a ride and bought me Thai food!
I played Duke Nukem Forever today!
It's been a good day.
