So what's the deal? Should I hold out for another month or two while they sort stuff out with patches? Is it playable now with all the updates? Been interested for awhile now, but all the negative posts have me wary.

I think they need to decouple it from the level of the sovereign.
Master of Magics system (which I reference because I love the game) was excellent in that it was more tied to how well your empire was doing and not a single unit.
More cities = more mana
more people in some cases = more mana
more military strength = more mana since you can conquer Mana nodes
Then they coupled that with "caster skill" which determined the amount of mana points you could spend per turn. So even if you had a ton of mana, you couldn't spend it all unless you invested in leveling your caster skill. This prevent magic from being too powerful right out the gate, but also gave it room to grow in mid/late game.
It was an excellent system that let the magic become more powerful as the game progressed.
Elemental's magic system doesn't even seem worth the effort right now. Hopefully they'll redesign it to make sense. They need to make it so early game it's not overpowered and late game it's not underpowered. The current system just doesn't achieve that balance.
