There was a really cool area on tree island with a small plateau against a rock wall. I began chipping away at the wall, and not even two blocks in, a massive natural cave system presented itself. At this point it was dark, so I jumped in, placed my remaining two torches, walled off the entrance and staked out for the night, but not before getting the idea to dig a tunnel from this new base all the way to my main compound across the reasonably small stretch of ocean. I also wanted to turn the plateau into a boat dock. But...this would take preparation, and preparation takes daylight.
When the sun rose I went at it. I fleshed out the entrance of the new base a bit. I made it so when you enter the door on the side of the cliff, you have to cross a long, narrow bridge over a very deep chasm that I tried to fill with water, but it wouldn't work. I'm not sure how to get water to retain. So I decided to make this large chasm that I spent a good portion of an hour chiseling out, into a multiple level base. That will be tonight...
Anyway, I stocked up on supplies, secured the new base, and looked out across the sea to my massive totem pole covered in torches, marking the entrance of my main compound on the other island. I used this totem as a directional guide, I was going to try to approximate a tunnel directly there. As it turns out, I decided to explore that natural cave system instead. It was by far the most expansive and high-yielding system I have seen in the game yet. Coal EVERYWHERE. Iron EVERYWHERE. I literally did not have to dig at all (aside from mining), and in about 20 minutes I had reached bedrock/lava. Needless to say, I was very, very lost, because I am terrible with my directional torch placement. Deep in the depths of this planet, I came across that bloodstone stuff, which I mined after setting up a quick deep-mine shop with a furnace and workbench so I could make an iron pickaxe.
I tunneled upwards with a method I've watched Notch use in his testing, it took about 15 minutes but I will be damned if it's not fucking awesome when you finally break through and it's daylight. I had tunneled across the sea, alright. But not to my intended island.
The best part about this game is the fact that you can let your imagination run totally wild.
