John Abercrombie has been with Irrational since the studio only made PC games. But, since his studio likes to make triple-A action games (in other words, can't possibly avoid becoming multiplatform because it's completely pointless to make a PC-exclusive shooter with a decent budget), he's suddenly an idiot console developer who doesn't know anything about the PC? Am I reading the tone in here right?
Guess what: developers don't need your goddamn approval on every single issue. The more PC gamers decide to respond to every statement or action with entitlement and self-righteousness, the less appealing this platform is going to become for developers, and the more horrible bullshit is going to get tacked onto PC games in an effort to keep revenue from dropping further. Would you want to have to put up with your shit? Writing for a gaming audience, I read a lot of this shit, but I'm sure it's not even a fraction of the shit anyone developing for PC has to put up with.
Yes, there's Valve and Blizzard. Most companies are not Valve and Blizzard. If you're happy simply playing nothing but Valve and Blizzard games, great. You'll probably be fine for quite a while. And yes, there's a considerable indie scene, which is one of the things I think is most exciting about the PC. But even there, a lot of those guys are increasing attempting to target other platforms where they have less shit to put up with. And having been reading this site for a long time, and having written for it, I know that isn't the primary interest of this crowd in the first place.
I love the PC, and philosophically I believe it is the best platform because of its openness and lack of control by a single corporation. But it's also a huge pain in the ass to make games for, and the number of people willing to actually pay for games on it--and I'm talking about actually buying a game, not funneling money into subscriptions or social gaming nonsense--is decreasing all the time. You can still develop a successful PC game if you budget right and target the right people. But when so many of those people act like scornful babies, I have to wonder what the incentive is.
