Turned out the game was pushing my q9550 close to 100C on stock cooling with NO OC! I replaced the heatsink and fan with some silver thermal paste and thermaltake V1 (its what we sell at BB) and haven't had a problem since.
I am going to guess the game stresses the system in ways previous games did not... so don't rule out some sort of hardware issue even if all of your other games work fine and even if it was a patch that started giving you issues. More than likely it was that patch which caused problems but really look at perhaps you have some sort of underlying hardware problem (bad RAM, slow RAM, overheated CPU/GPU, small PSU, overworked PSU, too many USB cables plugged in... etc)
