Google Docs was possible ten years ago with Java (Corel even had a WordPerfect for Java briefly). Server-side storage has always been around, it's just that storage space is so much more affordable now. AJAX could have been done years ago if web browser JavaScript implementations were more mature.
And I disagree that remote services will fully take over (that's not what you said but others have said it). Look no further than the Ubisoft DRM downtime to underscore why 100% reliance on the Internet is a bad idea. Sure, email is done in the cloud, but email was already an Internet function. Maybe I'll be wrong on this one but I think the main hurdles to something being online are not that someone hasn't thought of it yet.
Really though I just hate how rebranding actually works. Windows 7 is Vista with tweaks and bugfixes and people fell for it (which I sort of like actually since it redeemed Windows). DRM is just copy protection++. DLC is just Microtransactions with a new name. The Cloud is just the same old Internet we've already had this whole time, just evolved a bit. Only people have been trained for years now not to trust the Internet, but if we enforce this notion that "The Cloud" is somehow different then people might not realize that they need to be just as careful with "The Cloud" as they are with the Internet.
