There really is nothing like late night kill fest with just my guns and my AI buddy or real buddy, it always makes me feel warm inside. So how does Army of two the 40th day fair up to the original and the beloved Gear of Wars series? Does the game turn into a tasteless pile of garbage and waste of your time much like the horrendous trailer that almost made me not want to try the game http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/61828
So does the bullet fly straight and hit your target or does it turn out to be a dud and blow up in your face… read on

Third person shooters are some of my favorite type of shooters and I thoroughly enjoy them. Some of you may know I made the Borderlands mod (http://www.renewsoft.com/BorderLandsDR/) specifically so that I could play BL in third person (as one of my objectives) so I am definitely no stranger to genera or my love for them and have been anticipating the sequel of AoT.
Gears of wars and the first Army of two are two of my favorite third person shooters and are pretty close brothers in many ways and I always make time to play them once in a while. Before I go any further if you are a fan of either Gears of wars 1, 2 or Army of Two 1 stop reading and just go get the game NOW it blows away all three of these games and is outstanding in all accounts.
Man wtf another awesome highly polished game, Dark Void and Mass Effect 2 are still coming out? I have to say after watching the trailer http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/61828 I thought were they about to butcher my beloved franchise and add crap, bad humor, and who knows what else(I have not watched any other gameplay, trailers other the one trailer I mentioned)?
Man was I wrong Army of two the 40th day is epic and outstanding piece of software. To me it has the quality of Dragon Age but for a third person shooter, GoW while I love it should take a few pointers from this game. Holly shit the graphics, dare I say better or the same quality as Drakes Fortune 2 on the PS3 this may have the best graphics out of any Xbox 360 I think...
Damn there is so many things I love the game is near perfect, it even has weapon upgrade drops, the same you buy when you modify your guns. Also the new features are really great like moral choice decisions for key parts weather you kill or let live someone are epic, I had one of my top gaming moments with this so cool.
Things I liked:
- Graphics engine is nutz they use great lighting, normal mapping everywhere like even the ground. I am graphics whore so I was really surprised, high quality models, high res textures, looks great in 1080p on the 360 (I wonder if it is native?)
- Gameplay has really been tightened up, its has all the best parts from Gears and the first Army of Two and added all the stuff you wanted or was lacking.
- Taking hostages is very cool, sorta like Splinter Cell one, if you do it right and take the captain the guards will surrender really cool. So there is stealth parts if you want.
- Interesting new camera where you switch from left side to right works great when you get used to it.
- Great command system from you AI guy or buddies, like hold, advance etc.
- AI is real good, there are many difficulties you can set.
- The into and tutorial part is perfect is like watching a movie very cinematic not a pain in the ass, nice
- Great voice over’s and story really gets you into it, real nice job.
- Real awesome chose your moral kill or let live so cool gota see this, makes the game re playable will have to see what not killing key parts does? I choose to kill and it was truly epic, I played as the big guy if you get the game you gota try it out was so cool.
- Weapon modifications are the best of practically any game. With money you can modify the shit out of any of your weapons, primary, side arm, special. Each upgrade is RPG 100% and effect your performance etc. Not only does it add “mother fer my gun looks rad†it really makes a big dif (collect as much money as possible)
- I feel way way more attached to the characters this round they have really added allot of sorta cinematic quality to the game
- Great sound no beefs
- Nice cinematic effects
- Awesome GPS navigation if you get lost
- Great cover system
- Great tactics you can play lvl many different ways
- Love the agro system works real good
- You can pick up enemy weapons and use em
- There are modification drops in the game much like an rpg (I was really hoping they do this) really cool if you get a drop (I got an expensive primary weapon grip last night)
- Game flows really well
- One of the top coop game (2 player) on the market
Things I didn’t like:
- The camera system from switching from left to right can be a little strange if you are the kinda person that does not like managing many things. If you like to have more control of your combat this will be a huge plus. I really like it personally, some may at first go that’s different or strange. Once you get used to it was really well almost like a lean left right in a fps in a way.
- Really nothing I don’t really like… They did an awesome job on a sequel it actually destroys the first one in all aspects \m/
What a surprise, and I blame the marketing guys a bit the comedic approach to its trailers has really no place in the world of Army of Two I really don’t know why the frick they did that? Like I mentioned I had one of the top gaming moments when I had to decide to kill someone. It was very serious and made me question myself as the guy actually started talking making me think twice if I was right to kill him. Then when I did it was so rad the whole effect and cinematic that followed. To me the trailers should of shown this and focused on that, all well.
Bottom line there is truck loads of third person, cinematic, movie like, AoT, GoW, shooting carnage with shit loads of RPG upgrades (note no abilities and spells if wondering its just gear). The game overall is very polished right from the menu all through out if the game is this high quality throughout man I will be blown away. If you like shooting at all you must buy this game period.
Verdict: Definitely recommend if you enjoy shooting games, third person shooters, GoW, Army of Two 1, this is highly polished not empty and shallow, big jump.
At the least: I will go and say it’s a must buy for everyone unless you hate shooting and killing things
Last comment: Super quality and polish don’t let the EA publisher sway you the devs or whoever did a fantastic job, it is the best third person shooter I have played \m/
Later and Let The Bodies Hit The Floor… and mind your morality for you may be judged…
