1) Just bought the Civ 4 package. Do I have to install everything (CIV IV, Beyond the Sword, Colonization, Warlords)? Should I be only playing one of the versions? Or is it all integrated into the core game?
2) Looking for a new sci-fi book to read in the vein of Peter F. Hamilton's Commonwealth books and Night's Dawn trilogy. ie, stuff that's in the far future and spans virtually the entire galaxy (or at least a significant portion of it).

Colonization is a stand alone game and is a big modification of Civ IV but I'd play Civ IV BtS for a while first.
2) Iain M Banks Culture series is great galaxy-wide space-opera. also good in the same vein:
Asimov's Foundation trilogy
Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep
Alistair Reynolds Revelation Space series and also House of Suns
