Valve has been ignoring engine technology development, and has been making weird decisions in general since just after TF2 launched.
-L4D in general s a weird departure for them
-the preorder/expiring demo thing was weird
-obviously super light on content vs price at release - that is weird for them
-L4D2 announcement is odd too
-jars of fucking piss in TF2 is so fucking weird... randomly throwing things at the TF2 design is so strange for them, since they claim to be the kings of play testing... they can't have play tested all the future unlocks against all the other unlocks, so they are clearly playing up the playtesting side for marketing purposes while they throw random shit at what was once a tight design
-no ep3 stuff is weird. what is the point of having episodes then?
-no word on Portal stuff? That is the IP they should be hanging their hats on these days.
-no significant engine development on an engine which missed some marks compared to other contemporary engines even at launch many years ago
-no significant steam changes - still pretty bloaty and fugly, but at least it works now
It's been a long time, and most of that stuff can be done by different teams. Valve claims to not lack funding, so then it must be a lack of desire. There doesn't seem to be much cohesiveness going on already, and there doesn't seem to be a common direction the ship is being steered in, so what is the problem with adding more people and more teams? The disadvantage would be a lot of diversity, and lack of coherent vision, but since they dont have that anyway, why not ramp up development of these products? They are all massively profitable.
Tons of just weird decisions and strange plans at Valve these days.
