  • Today I have shortened my incomplete games list by one. I have defeated el Matador. Is this game as bad as the infamous Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30? Check my short review in reply to find out!

    • If you have never heard of el Matador, there's a reason for it: it is nothing new. As I was playing through it and not enjoying it, I was trying to figure out why. It has everything: bullet time, shooting dudes, explosions, etc. Then it dawned on me. This game does nothing new. It uses the Max Payne 2 engine, and you can tell.

      The good:
      Really good looking environments
Good framerate throughout on all details on high including antialiasing

      The bad:
      Generic gameplay
Unusual damage model. The game can't figure out what it wants to do. Does it want to be a fast paced action game where you can run and gun or does it want to be a tactical shooter? I found out that it wants to be a little bit of both, but do either too much and you get 0wned quickly. I ended up getting schooled in a few areas quickly because the gameplay felt too weird (especially the end boss).
Awful B movie storyline...I could see the "twist" from a mile away. They took this B movie storyline way too seriously. I swear I took out about 10 drug warehouses throughout the entire game.

      The ugly:
unusual dialogue and text (see: http://zslayer.com/images/shack/leader.JPG )
Sometimes during the cutscenes, dialogue would get cut off.

      Overall rating:
6.6/10...a little better than Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 because it wasn't as frustrating throughout. This is completely uninspired otherwise. Avoid this one like the plague unless you play a million Max Payne 2 total conversions and need another one.
