What is Evony?
Evony (they changed the name from Civony last night, possibly due to copyright issues) is a web-based MMO with a slick Flash interface. Kind of like the Ikariam game some folks played after we finished with Urban Dead a few years ago, but with much higher production values.
Does This Game Suck Like Ikariam?
We're not sure yet, but it looks purdy and so far it's been a fun way to pass the time. We'll see how that holds up once our seven days of newbie protection expire.
How Do I Get Started?
Go to http://www.evony.com and sign up (Server 5, in the state of Morovia is where we're playing). Just so you know, you'll need to upgrade to a Level 2 Town Hall and build an Embassy before you can join the Shaqnews alliance. But initially, focus on finishing the basic quests (look for the Quests icon in the lower-left corner) to get familiar with the interface, and build one of each resource fields (farm, lumber, stone, iron) to boost your production a bit early.

That led me to this post:
Alas, I'm done with this game.
My level 6 walls, 200 archer towers and 140 traps amounted to single-ply wet toilet paper when I got hit by a 220th ranked player sending in 2.7K archers, 3.5K swords, 3.5K warriors, and then repeated attempts to pillage me with 1.3k scouts (killed all those though thanks to my Abitibi defenses).
Teleported out of there but now my two cities are quite far apart. So meh. It's obvious that I'm too far behind the development curve to have a chance. And this game doesn't seem to have an end-game worth pursuing or much to offer in the way of strategic alliance coordination.
Good news is that I'm in the HOMM Kingdoms beta test which does have an end-game and substantive alliance coordination. And -- so far at least -- no horribly inequitable monetization model.
And that led me to the HOMM page:
