I have got to say, when I initially purchased this game, I god damned adored it!
The engine and the gameplay is great, the actual core code for co-op and the backend 'stuff' how it's been implimented, I spose the concept in general is fresh and new.
This game is exactly how a lot of us older people imagined co-op could be when we were kids! Imagine Doom 1 in co-op (15 years ago) being like L4D? This game is EXACTLY how we saw it in our heads!
Imagine playing Aliens co-op? We imagined it, just like L4D (but with Aliens, duh)
Every single time my mates and I would discuss co-op as teenagers we'd think of gameplay like this. It's so cinematic, it's fantastic - I am not even a zombie fan but the gameplay itself would be perfect for so many different games or games based on movies, honestly the possibilities feel endless.
I want to clarify here, I play L4D in co-op only, I'm not a huge VS fan, it's the co-op which does it for me, working together with buddies just like a movie, it's very very immersive.
I guess I'm in the minority of course, seems most people like VS mode.
I would say I've finished the game at least 10 times on each campaign all of them in Expert as well, (although missing the achievement for one)
Anyhow, I went on holiday in January and my small group of friends kind of disbanded and was never the same when I returned.
The criticism I have is that Valve damn well threw away the potential for the next counter strike.
How many copies of Half Life 1 sold, due to CS? Before you could buy CS independantly, you had to buy HL1 and then load on CS for free as a mod and it sold god knows how many copies of HL, this business model kicks ass, as gamers we love it, no DLC milking, just sale upon sale of an old game many years after release (think Burnout Paradise)
Also similar is Warcraft 3, so many addons by the community, for free, keeping the game alive, via DOTA or custom SP campaigns, custom MP maps etc - this has kept its heart beating for years.

Now this free DLC today is great, please don't get me wrong but how awesome would it have been if the SDK came out November, December, January even? it's nearly May now.
How many people from the community have given up on the game and moved on to bigger and better things? How many are modding for Crysis or the Unreal engine?
How many posts across the internets have you seen where people are burned out on the game?
I still see a good future for L4D but honestly the first 6 weeks of playing this game, I felt we had the potential for the greatest thing in gaming in years here, the campaigns could be endless.
I never thought I'd write this sentence but this game was the best multiplayer thing to come along for single player gamers EVER, I got the single player experience over and over and over! it's bloody awesome.
I wish Valve luck and I do hope to play this DLC tonight when I get home (believe it or not, I'm quite eager!)
I just hope community does actually thrive and they haven't let it cool off a little too much with this delay, the potential to be a huge huge thing is within this game as it appeals surprisingly to the single player online demographic (an untapped market)
While I'm on my pedestal, how do the rest of you feel about this? Does anyone else adore L4D's co-op mode and do you like the 'free upgrades but ongoing sales' business model?
(look who has been listening to too many podcasts, full of armchair analysts)

Valve seems to be squander some opportunities. Sure they probably make a million gabiliion dollars with games like L4D and they seem to be fine with just doing that. They don't seem to be in any hurry to do anything because, hey, they're Valve and they are doing awesome.
As a leader in the industry they do great things....but seem to miss other things. The work they do with Steam and indie developers is awesome. The sales on Steam are awesome. But there are weird decisions they make that just seem to hurt their games and irritate their players. For example, the biggest complaint about L4D is the lack of new maps. That seems like it would be easy to remedy. Release new maps themselves or release the SDK so other people can do that. The game was released in fucking November 2008. They are just now releasing the SDK. Why so long after release? The SDK obviously has existed for ever as they used it themselves to make the game.
If no SDK then why didn't they release maps? Sure it's a lot of work but they've had half a year. You think they could've released a couple of maps by now...at the very least maybe one map. I'm sure they have their reasons and that I sound like some irrational Internet moron but still it'd be nice to hear a reason for some of their decisions.
L4D still has life in it there is no doubt, yet it could have so many more players if they'd released content for it sooner to keep the spark going. I just don't understand and being on the outside looking in, it just looks like laziness. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know.
