For what it's worth: it exploded clicking on an embedded youtube link, which is something I've probably done a hundred times by now. Chrome on Windows 7

Short of running DFT on both and/or updating the seagate firmware you may want to try booting xp recovery console to see if data on xp drive is still there and to run fixboot/fix whatever
If bios won't see the xp drive when only it is plugged in try swapping cables and the like
Last but not least - bad psu/mobo
