I was playing some Fallout 3 and I heard my wife run and slide in her socks across the linoleum floor downstairs. She called upstairs, "I just started a fire." There was no urgency in her voice whatsoever, so I figured she put a log in the fireplace just like the night before. But then I replayed those two events in my head and slowly realized how strange it would be for her to run across the kitchen just to tell me she had started a fire in the fireplace. I asked "In the fireplace?" and she replied "No!".
Adrenaline spike.
Turns out she had washed her shoes, my son's shoes, and my daughter's shoes earlier in the evening and had decided to dry them in the oven so they would be dry in the morning. She said she actually had the oven door open and the temperature set as low as possible, but somehow her shoes actually caught on fire. By the time I got down there the fire was out her shoes were smoking on the oven door.
As she related the story to me, I learned she had grabbed the burning shoes with her bare hands and blown out the fire. I kindly informed her that step 1 of dealing with a fire in the oven is to leave it in the oven, as opposed to her strategy of TAKE FIRE OUT OF OVEN AND PUT CLOSER TO FLAMMABLE THINGS LIKE FACE AND HOUSE.
Anyway, her shoes were burnt up pretty bad and part of one of my son's shoes was melted and brown and ruined. My daughter's shoes were on the top rack and were undamaged. At least the smoke alarms didn't go off. Thank god for the vaulted ceiling. :(
