"Ditch some of your hardware, ditch some of your applications, and use this new operating system." When an operating system requires changes like that, people start asking about the compelling reasons for the upgrade.
The problem for Microsoft is that they eventually do need to break compatibility if they want to offer a faster, better, more secure operating system, because doing so will inevitably involve architecture changes, and significant architecture changes always involve some lost compatibility.
