        Hiigara: The Aftermath (V1.01)

"This is a complete mess," said Karen S'jet as she viewed Hiigara from the main viewscreen on board the Agam, one of the few remaining Hiagaran Battlecruiser to survive the Vaygr siege. The planet's surface lit up the night side of he planet not from city lights or lifting starships, but from the fires of the cities and forests caused by the siege.

Hiigara had been besieged by the Vaygr for weeks while the fleet she led scoured the galaxy for Sajuuk, a powerful progenitor warship that helped defeat the Vaygr and destroyed the planet killers that would have wiped out their homeworld's entire population with its endless barrage of subterranean nuclear missiles.

"It's going to take decades for our planet to recover from the damaged cause by the orbital bombardment the Vaygr unleashed. The missile batteries and fleet were able to minimize the damage for the first two weeks but they ran out missiles shortly after that and by then much of the fleet had either been destroyed or retreated to safe zones within the system to regroup," spoke the Fleet Intelligence officer who continues to accompany her since the campaign began, "The damn Vaygr even resorted to using disabled or destroyed capital ships from the battles, some of which still had crews within them, to bombard the planet. It didn't matter if it were our ships or theirs."

"That's incredible how far they went to accomplish this mission, what else have the initial surveys been able to collect for the report?" asked S'jet.

"It's only been a week since the Vaygr retreated but our military bases on the planet seemed to fare pretty well as much of them are underground and connected via subterranean communications. We lost a few to the more exceptional bombardments and only half of the space ports on the ground are operational. The troops are doing the best they can to provide relief but they're saving themselves as much as they're saving anyone else. The Council of Planetary Disaster Relief is stretched and barely doing their part. At least we're beginning to receive aid from the other planetary governments but some of them are going through the same thing we're going through so we're not expecting anything from them and vice versa," reported the intelligence officer. "What's even more disconcerting is the security situation. Civilian population centers that survived the bombardment largely intact are under control for the most part but the outer cities where much of our production and resource operations lie much in ruin and it's where we're seeing the most problems. It'll be a while before our people can get a handle on that situation."

"So it'll be sometime before we all can return home is that correct?" queried S'jet, but she already knew that answer. She wanted to hear him answer it because she had always enjoyed hearing the voice of her intelligence officer. It gave her comfort and confidence throughout their campaign and continues to do so in the current aftermath.

"No, only personnel earmarked for relief operations are being sent planetside. The shipyards are working at full capacity to repair our ships and those that can provide support for relief operations have priority: Troop transports, cargo haulers, and logistics vessels. The Agam won't see a space dock for a three weeks at best," the officer briefed.

War has made its many marks on the Agam. Only a handful of battlecruisers from the original fleet of 78 had survived largely intact. Many areas of the Agam have been sealed off due to hull damage which the crew have started repairing with little resources they had. Even its propulsion systems functioned enough to maintain a steady orbit over Hiigara but its main systems for Command, Control, and Communications remained intact. Because of this the Agam has been pressed into the role of a makeshift operation center as it now merely sits in orbit like a space station. Other Cruisers still capable of combat operations have been formed into strike fleets to protect the incoming relief supplies and hunt down remaining Vaygr ships that escaped after their victory but still lingered in their system.

"Well, make sure this report gets finalized and sent to the council. They're going to want to hear about the overall situation. They're still quite unhappy about my decision to take control of the central government and maintained martial law," said S'jet, "Continue on with the report and I'll be in my quarters collecting myself for the fury of the council."

"Understood ma'am, the council should be grateful you didn't disband them. We're still expecting some more reports from the status of the pursuant fleets and environmental reports but the report should be ready in the next few hours. I recommend too that you get some sleep, you should be able to squeeze in a few hours before the report is done."

"Thanks and I will too," S'jet lied, "Make sure you do the same after the report is done. I'll see you when the report is ready." S'jet couldn't sleep knowing the burden on her shoulders and that of her people. She knew that the time between war and peace has always been uneasy and she much would prefer being in the other two to keep it simple. But once the crisis is over she can only hope to sleep peacefully once more.
