Just because the subject matter is a far-fetched one involving robots doesn't mean it can't be done with some degree of authenticity, consistency and realism. Nor should the subject matter of transforming-robots-lawl mean it can or should forego qualities like a convincing story, sympathetic characters, and good pacing.
Aliens was about marines fighting alien monsters in outer space but the subject matter was treated seriously. The world it created was believable. The action scenes put you on the edge of your seat but was also complemented by a great script, awesome environment/prop/vehicle/enemy design, and a colorful cast.
King Kong was about a giant ape tearing up some dinosaurs lol but had a convincing storyline and good acting from Adrien Brody and Naomi Watts. There were scenes that made Ann Darrow endearing to the audience and others that made the audience sympathize with a computer generated giant ape.
Kill Bill was about a samurai sword wielding badass chopping up hundreds of bad dudes but the storytelling was completely engaging and had me rooting for the heroine. There were scenes that made me buy into the almost-godlike fighting skill of Uma Thurman and others that showed she was a vulnerable human being.
True Lies was a humorous take on a James Bondish world, with a family man leading a double life and shooting up terrorists. But the world was internally consistent and done with a serious treatment, even if the subject matter was tongue in cheek. There was a well written script with some hilarious dialogue. Tom Arnold was funny and convincing as a divorced and bitter, wisecracking sidekick. Jamie Lee Curtis gave a heart-wrenching confession about her life dreams and insecurities.
This is the difference between Robocop and Demolition Man. Between Kill Bill and Aeon Flux. Goldeneye and Die Another Day. Aliens and The Relic.
I don't know if Transformers is going to be in the latter group or not. Some of the action scenes look pretty crazy. But the robot designs are terrible and way too busy and the director's past work is a montage of cliche action scenes.
The idea that shit exploding on the screen interspersed with generic car chases and forgettable characters suffices as entertainment is beyond me.
