Howevern, I think Nintendo's got a lot going for it this time around that puts them at an advantage over the competition.
For starters, there is of course the price. Make no bones about it, the 360 and the PS3 are not inexpensive systems. Of course, neither were the original Xbox or the PS2 when the Gamecube came out (also at a lower price than the competition). Which brings me to my next point.
Next up, Nintendo's got the production facilities to back up demand. Sony's having a ton of issues meeting their (fairly meager) hardware production goals. It's gonna be a while before you can just walk into EB or Best Buy and pick one up without hunting around first. I think this might swing some people toward the Wii, if only as something to tide them over until PS3 production catches up with demand. This could give them a much needed early edge. Of course, it may be a bit difficult to grab a Wii early on, but it won't be nearly as bad as tring to find a PS3.
Point the third: I think developers WANT to support the Wii. Hell, if I were a game developer, I'd be excited as all hell to figure out something nifty to do with the Wiimote. Sure, we'll end up with a bunch of fairly pointless gimmick uses in games like we do from time to time on the DS (see also: stupid seal system in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow), but I think a lot of developers are genuinely excited about the possibilities.
The controller is really, really neat. If you haven't already, check out a Wii kiosk the next time you're at your local EB and play some Excite Truck, you'll see what I mean. The thing works incredibly well. Nintendo is aiming to snag some of the "non-gamer" crowd, and I think they might pull it off.
And like I said, even if it ends up like the cube, that still means we have a bunch of great Nintendo games to look forward to.
