Newer beatles, passats, golfs, and jettas are what i've had the most experience with.
Basically, get the BEST warranty you can and make sure it covers as much "little stuff" as possible.
My sisters 2003 beatle for instance, little shit just kept breaking. Locks, sunroof, air conditioner, etc. And then, when her warranty finally did go, like not even 300 miles after it, the transmission just took a dump. That was an expensive fix.
That's just one of the many stories I could tell you though. My friends' dad's passat had all sorts of pump problems. That thing was in the shop 3 months of the year ever since he bought it like in 2001. He was in a rental car a lot.
Oh, and lastly...if you buy one from a dealer, expect to have to call a week in advance for Warranty Repairs. At least in tulsa, they are ALWAYS backed up a ton. I can't really recommend these cars after all I've seen with them.
I have a honda civic. I have been able to do all the basic maintenance myself, and even some minor/medium repairs on anything I did have problems with. And it didn't take like and the parts were pretty cheap.
