Quakecon was a free LAN party run 100% by volunteers. Sponsors ran their booths, but there wasn’t any corporate oversight for a long time before Bethesda.
Blizzcon is a paid corporate sponsored pep-rally to increase Activision shareholder value, to drive tourism dollars and traffic to the convention center and most importantly to sell merchandise.
Not at all the same kind of event. There’s a lot of overlap in potential attendee demographics, but I don’t think there’s a favorable comparison to be made.
Blizzcon has much more in common with something like Star Wars Celebration than Quakecon or even Dreamhack.
