New PlayStation 4 console rumored to support 4K gaming

A new PlayStation 4 may be in development to give console owners a taste of 4K gaming.

The PlayStation 4 has only been on the market for a little over two years, but today, developer sources have revealed Sony is currently developing a new version of its console that will offer 4K gaming by increasing its graphical capabilities.

The new PlayStation 4 will include an upgraded GPU, which will support 4K gaming and add more processing power, thus enhancing PlayStation VR titles. Developers will also be able to push more effects and other graphical tweaks to help improve the visuals of their games.

While rumors appear to have been circulating regarding an improved PlayStation 4, this week’s Game Developer’s Conference added fuel to the fire as Sony reportedly held meetings with developers in regards to the new hardware.

Good luck with that. Two 980 Tis in SLI can barely do 4K for $1500

Exactly ^^^^ as much as I love the idea hard core it doesn't seem practical unless it has a new GeForce X180 Ti in the box LOL. Like you said two 980 Ti's 100% don't cut it for 4K @ 60FPS MAX.

Keep in mind though on a console you totally don't need 1 - 1 GPU and CPU PC hardware(its not the same at all). Still my gut says it would need at a minimum a Fury or a 980 Ti and that is like 1K+ CND!

Will see hey if they do it some how it be EPIC! But I am not going to hold my breath, since they need 4X the GPU power that is in the PS4 now at a minimum to do 4K.

Regardless both MS and Sony want to juice either consoles hardware and I am 1000% for it.

It be really rad if they kept their same OS's and just update/add their new drivers and all the old games ran natively but with higher AA, AF, etc(as a bonus). Man so many would go for it I would think.

Personally I hope they are both new boxes with like I said 100% native support for all the old games aka no emulation. Add some sort of trade up for the old boxes and that be epic, I get one day 1.

I think that will be key going forward keep/update your OS and APIs don't start fresh just update the hardware that you need for the console refreshes so all the software works from the old console. Then it be like getting a new GPU and everything else just works, to me this is the future of consoles. How they do this who knows but they got to change something the current model doesn't work anymore.

You'd be surprised how far a single 980ti can get you at 4k. Perfectly fine for running most games released within the past 3 years at 60fps. And older games don't even provide a challenge.

I've found it's mostly just the fancy eye-candy FPS shooters that don't play so great at 4k on a single 980ti. Battlefield 3/4, Star Wars: Battlefront, Far Cry 3/4, etc.

Well, it depends on whether you're running on high or low graphics settings. Two 980 ti's still can't hit a constant 60fps at 4k on Street Fighter 5 when it is maxed.

I would take a 4K @ 60FPS console with native backwards compatibility of all existing and future PS4 software no emulation for $600 over VR any day. LOL :) shit I would go pitch a tent right now and get in line if it was real. Man to me it would be so freaking epic I even pay $700 for this ^^^

Wake me up when this is real, I want to believe... man if they really do this that be insanely cool.

Coincidentally I have a 4K Corpses 'N Souls build sitting on my comp, Sony broseph hit me up @valcan_s be talking to you soon \m/ :)

imo somehow this rumor became 4k "gaming" instead of 4k "scaling". It's obvious they plan to release a slim ps4 with 4k scaling

Exactly. If you know anything about current GPU's, you know true 4k visuals on a console is a pipe dream.

But scaling to 4k, that's totally doable, and might just need slight hardware upgrade (maybe just a scaler chip?) to become possible. Like BF4 on PS4, currently it runs at 900p internally, and is upscaled to 1080p. That creates some noticeable scaling artifacts. Allow that 900p to upscale to 4k instead, the scaling artifacts become much less noticeable.

You know what 900p scaled up to 4K looks like? Hint: 900p

I would hope so. But it would look even closer to 900p on an 8k TV. That would be almost on par with running 1600x900 to a PC CRT (which is the only way to see what native 900p looks like)
