Hearthstone brings out the nerfs for Undertaker

The Undertaker's reign of terror in Hearthstone has ended, thanks to a nerf issued by Blizzard this morning.

The streak has ended for the Undertaker, according to Blizzard. Hearthstone players woke up this morning to find the powerful 1-mana minion nerfed significantly to the point that it may no longer be viable.

In the wake of Goblins vs. Gnomes, none benefitted from the influx of Deathrattle minions more than Naxxramas' Undertaker. Undertaker's effect of gaining 1 attack/1 defense for each Deathrattle minion summoned quickly gained steam to the point that players could boost it early enough to effectively end games fast. However, Blizzard posted the following to Battle.net this morning:

Undertaker now reads: Whenever you summon a minion with Deathrattle, gain +1 Attack. Undertaker had proved frustrating to play against, as of late, thanks to the influx of low-cost Deathrattle minions. It often gained both Attack and Health stats significantly above those of other inexpensive minions very early in the game. With this change, we expect Undertaker will still be better than other 1-Mana minions when played in a deck with a Deathrattle theme, but more likely to die in combat against other minions.

The change is costly to Undertaker users, who can see the minion's weak 2 defense get wiped from the board via spells like the Paladin's Consecration or the Priest's Holy Nova. On top of that, Undertaker users may simply substitute him out for the newer Micro Machine, which will simply get a +1 attack boost at the end of every player's turn.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I would say "about time" but Naxxramas is probably relatively new compared to how long it's taken Blizzard to nerf some other cards. Still, this thing was way out-of-whack. Once Ben Brode issued that statement that they're still looking into Undertaker after an interview it seemed like only a matter of time.
