Civilization 5 gets a free week on Steam prior to Beyond Earth

It's a long wait before Civilization: Beyond Earth hits this week. So why not play Civ V in the meantime?

Anyone that's into Sid Meier's Civilization is in the midst of an agonizing wait, since Civilization: Beyond Earth won't arrive until October 24. So 2K is offering a little something while everyone waits.

The last game in the series, Sid Meier's Civilization V, will be playable for free from now until October 23 at 10AM PDT on Steam. Those interested in picking up that game can grab it for full price. For those simply killing time until Beyond Earth arrives, that game can be pre-loaded on Steam right now.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I would like a free weekend with Beyond Earth to decide if I want to buy it.

The game play won't be that much different between the two. There will be some new concepts, but the games typically retain their core values. I'll be live streaming Beyond Earth on the Shacknews Twitch channel beginning on Friday at 3:00 PM EDT... pop by and hang out. :)

If they can bring it to a level of Civ 5 + BNW polish, I'm OK with it being more like Civ 5 and a new coat of paint. I'm slightly worried it will be more like Civ 5 in 2010 than Civ 5 in 2014.

I just bought Civ5 on friday. The only thing I find comforting that I spent the money is that this didn't come out on the weekend. Civ during a work week? Ya, I want to keep my job.

I hope you bought it with the expansions, the base game (which is the only free-to-play part) is immensely helped by them.
