Microsoft has returned from Gamescom with a gift for its Xbox One users: the new August update. The update rolled out over the course of Sunday evening and is now available to all Xbox One owners. This month's update adds some much-requested UI updates, as well as support for 3D Blu-ray playback.

Major Nelson details the big changes in the video below. The activity feed has received somewhat of a visual overhaul, making it easier to follow. It's also getting some Facebook-like functionality in that users can 'like,' comment, and share certain posts.

The other big addition is the low battery notification for Xbox One controllers. Users will now see a pop-up notification whenever their battery is running low, giving them a chance to switch out batteries in-between gaming sessions.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Turning off notifications during video playback a key one there. So annoying to have those popping up while watching a movie.
