The Destiny beta has wrapped up, which means it's time for the requisite boasting. Activision announced today that 4.6 million players participated in the beta, making it the largest of this console generation so far and the largest ever for a new franchise.

To be more exact, the beta had reached 4,638,937 players by the time it closed Sunday evening. Pat yourself on the back if you were one of them, because without your involvement it would have been a mere 4,638,936.

"We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta," said Bungie COO Pete Parsons, in the announcement. "We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we'll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch."

There was nothing else to play...so I said why the fuck not. Doesn't mean it was because people were looking forward to it.

Every game out right now has been out for months there hasn't been a big block buster game released yet. All the big hit games will come out next year. Both systems are hurting when it comes out to games. Its rather slow and limited games. So when the beta was out most people said sure why not.

No, most people went and preordered the game, thereby gaining access to the beta. Get a clue.

Beta is open to everyone. No pre ordering needed. At first yes but eventually they opened it to everyone and people like myself who weren't interested in the game played it. Do you know how public betas and private betas work?

Didn't it only open to everyone in like, the last day or two of beta?

It was open for about 5 days I want to say? I could be wrong. I know the weekend was their stress day they wanted tons of people in there in Saturday.

You are wrong. Beta was only open the last day or two of the beta. Preordering was necessary to even play it the first several days. It's like you didn't like and can't fathom the idea that other people are looking forward to this game.

Wow - that is pretty Debbie Downer. Maybe it is ok for them to celebrate a milestone like this?

That doesn't necessarily mean guarantee. For example call of duty a huge franchise and from my group of peers not a single one is going to buy the new version of the game. I'm not speaking for millions but many people get tired of the same game. In sure it will still sell millions though as new generation of kids are getting into the franchise for the first time but people like me who has been with it since the first call of duty I'm done.

Most games could not reach 1 million players with a free beta.

I wasn't looking forward to it, had plenty of other shit to play, yet I kept loading up the beta and playing it knowing full well my progress will be lost. I want to play MOAR.

And "only" 2 million people watched the DOTA international. Your words do nothing but bring negativity

I think this is more true than people care to admit. Everyone has their new gen system, but very few new games have come out lately.

It's also on previous gen systems. Would be interesting to see the breakdown of players on all four systems.
