The Warcraft movie is so real it has a date. Blizzard has announced that the upcoming film from Legendary Pictures will be in theaters on December 18, 2015.

Distributed by Universal, the upcoming film will be directed by Duncan Jones, best known for his work on Moon and Source Code. The budget for Warcraft is expected to exceed $100 million. The script is already complete, and production is expected to start this fall. The Academy Award-winning team from Life of Pi will handle the visual effects for the film.

      Sir, subs are dropping!
Release the movie! and tie in expansion

While I don't agree with the game play transitions from vanilla to current, I'd play WoW if I had the time.

This movie has the highest chance of being decent of any video game movie. Seriously.

I suspect this is going to be another Dungeons & Dragons. I mean what is going to differentiate this movie between the star studded lineup and writing that is LOTR?

It's being produced by Legendary Pictures, who have a track record of helping make good-to-great genre pictures. Their films include:

        Batman Begins
        300
        The Dark Knight
        Watchmen
        Clash of the Titans
        Inception
        The Town
        The Dark Knight Rises
        Pacific Rim

I see your point but not one of those is a video game adaptation. It'll be great for the industry if they do pull it off but I certainly have my doubts. Outside of the instances there's no plot for the movie to follow right?

Isn't it a Warcraft movie, not a World of Warcraft movie? It could be based on stuff from the RTS games, or even if it is more WoW related it could be tied to loose plot threads

To be fair all the stuff from Warcraft 1-3 is included, at least in part, within the WoW canon and lore.

The only way this would be relevant is if they chose to completely ignore the additions WoW made to that lore but while that would allow them a little more freedom with the source material it would also piss off the majority of the existing fan-base.

Right, but I mean if they did want to follow an existing plot it could just e.g. (broadly) use the story from Warcraft 3 (not that I expect them to do this), or in the loose plot threads area it could be about say, Alleria and Turalyon and their current whereabouts which fans would prob be pretty happy about it if it was done well and wouldn't be particularly bogged down by WoW baggage

Duncan Jones isn't retarded so as long as they don't let Metzen fuck it up too much (unlikely) I think they have a decent shot of focusing in on some tight enough story that it might turn out okay

Speaking of Metzen, how many voice overs do you think he'll ruin in the movie?

I just don't see how this could be good.

I like WoW as much as anyone, I've even read several of the Warcraft novels, and I'm generally ultra-forgiving on this type of film ... but unless they stray excessively far away from the source material and just do away with fan-service all-together I don't see how a Warcraft movie could be anything other than a jumbled mess.

That is probably the best of the Warcraft stories I'm familiar with from a "mainstream viability" perspective.

Either that or the dragons and the rise of Deathwing (the first time) but that would take several films.
