PlayStation Plus members get free movies via EPIX app

While PlayStation Plus subscribers have regularly enjoyed free games through Sony's Instant Game Collection, they'll soon be able to get free movies as well. The EPIX app is launching on PS3 later today, and it will offer up a free weekly movie to Plus members--even if you're not a subscriber to the EPIX service.

EPIX aims to be a competitor to HBO and the like by offering recent movie releases, original programming, comedy shows, boxing matches, concerts, and more.

According to the PlayStation.Blog, a free 14-day trial will be made available to all PSN users when the app launches later today. However, to get a full subscription, you'll need to have television service with one of the following providers: Charter, Cox Communications, DISH Network, EPB Fiber Optics, Mediacom, Suddenlink, or Verizon FiOS. EPIX explains in an FAQ that, like HBO, "we do not offer stand-alone subscriptions to EpixHD.com or the EPIX device apps."

EPIX will also be available on PS Vita later, which should make taking advantage of that PlayStation Plus offer that much easier.
