Grand Theft Auto 5 PC petition gains traction

An online petition asking Rockstar to release Grand Theft Auto 5 for the PC is gaining momentum online, quickly rising toward its goal of 100,000 signatures.

Rockstar's been mum on the possibility of Grand Theft Auto 5 heading to PC, and fans of the platform are none-too-happy about it. The complaints have taken the form of an online petition, and it's gaining momentum.

As of the time of writing, the petition (via IGN) has reached more than 73,000 signatures, quickly approaching its goal of 100,000. The petition hopes that by showing Rockstar that support for a PC version exists, it can coax the publisher into producing a port of the game.

The petition raises the history of mods in the Grand Theft Auto series, and the relative power of the PC platform to run the game. Grand Theft Auto 4, in particular, has enjoyed a healthy extended lifespan in the mod scene. Rockstar has not explicitly ruled out a PC version, but has said it is "currently focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions" right now.

Actually, they didn't. The studio that released RDR has never ported a game to PC and R* were fairly clear that the code base accurately reflects the mess that the development process was.

By "they" he probably meant people in general not Rockstar. Also I didn't know about this development mess, so my angry response below looks rather silly, because I can somewhat understand their point now.

Do you really think Sony and Microsoft are both paying Rockstar for console exclusivity? I'd say it's more that console sales will blow PC sales out of the water and they're focusing on their biggest profit-makers first.

Exactly. RDR's dev process was a mess. It wasn't even supposed to be open world. The previous game in the franchise was also console only. These are the only reasons it didn't come to PC.

Yeah but don't R* usually move porting to other studios, such as Leeds.

To have a true R* North PC version again though would be awesome.

FFS, I knew some idiot would bring it up (no offense, it's just pissing me off, how often this is presented as an argument).

GTA has always been on PC and Rockstar has pulling this "Oh, we might do it...maybe" bullshit so many times, it's fucking retarded PR wank to keep the game in the news.

Red Dead Redemption was a new (single-game) IP and was paid for to stay exclusive. The greedy Rockfags bent over for that and took it up the ass hard. An additional reason might be that they were too lazy.

Excuse my language but I loathe Rockstar for keeping RDR from me and for several other reasons like the shitty Rockstar Social Club, awful port of GTA IV (which resulted in me buying the game for 7 Euros on Steam after it had been patched) etc. etc.

I expect GTA V to be awesome, but I sure as hell won't pick it up on day one. PC day one that is, which will probably be exactly 6 months after the console launch, give or take a few weeks.

Also, since you seem too dense to check it out yourself:
"(...) no offense, it's just pissing me off, how often this is presented as an argument."

Wow, I understand why you're angry but I'm not taking it that hard. If it comes out on xbox I'll play it on xbox. I have RDR on xbox and it's a great game. I don't care that it's not on pc. I'd play it with a xbox controller anyways.

Yeah, was a silly rant about an issue I have never written about anywhere, so I used this news post to let that steam off. I have talked about it before, but writing it down online is a lot more relieving.

Well I don't have an Xbox nor do I want one. I'm a 100% PC gamer you know?^^
So, this isn't really an option for me. I played a tiny bit of RDR on a friends Playstation which was okay, but I generally don't like consoles that much, for many reasons, but admittedly the major one is being spoiled by the PC.

Best platform, hands down. For me, anyways.

Difference is Rockstar knows how well their games sell on console vs PC already and cosistently release them some months later.

The "Up for consideration" line from RS is just marketing scam-speak to increase the console version's sales. GTA IV San Andreas and GTA IV were both released on PC something like 1 year after the consoles. The PC market for GTA V alone is bigger than the market for most well-doing multi-platform games. It's phenomenally huge. Red Dead Redemption didn't see a PC release, but that was because RStar were advised that there wasn't a market for westerns or whatever... so they probably didn't want to take the chance. Of course, the game did amazingly well.

Now they're using that blip on their track record to trick people into thinking the PC version of one of the biggest selling PC series of all time will not happen, in order to maximize the console sales.

      Gratuity:

GTA on consoles is shit anyway. Look how aliased the screenshots for GTA V are in larger versions: I almost want to puke from the jaggies and cannot bear playing games that look like so anymore. The inevitable PC release will not only look a million bucks better, but will run at higher framerates and have more enjoyable controllability. Console gaming is dinosaurnish. And not the totally-awesome dinosaurish, but the one that's old, lame, and crippled, and can be tipped over with a slight poke from your pinkie, or boner the boner that you got from the last up-to-date PC game that you played, or from the massive savings you got while enacting your latest PC game shopping spree, where every weekend some publisher or developer has their entire catalog on sale for, often, 60% off, on Steam, GoG, Impulse, Origin (yuk, die origin), Gamefly, GamersGate, Get Games, GREENMAN GAMING (fuck yes, and then slap an additional 20% discount code on top of that 60% off, haha)... and more.

(if anyone wants an additional $2 off their first purchase when signing up for Greenmangaming, you can use my referral link here: http://www.greenmangaming.com/?gmgr=colocino , or just copy and paste /?gmgr=colocino after greenmangaming.com)

Console gaming is dead, not only due to hardware limitations, but also due to contoll limitations and steep prices. Fact: the next gen of consoles are already hardware dated by today's PC standards. When they release in 2013/2014, they will be significantly behind modern PC computing. Buying one will be somewhat like buying a wii U today... but a bit better. There's a market, but people who like the greatest and largest games will be looking to alternate pastures.

According to an article released last week, PC is now the largest gaming platform, with a larger gaming base and active customers than any of the consoles. Do you really want to have to break out the dustbroom and start up the flux capacitor just to play a game with obscene jaggies?

GMG's winter sale, running for the next month, has a massive number of games priced at 50 - 75% off, with a discount voucher for an additional 25% after that, plus another $2 off if you use my referral link: http://www.greenmangaming.com/?gmgr=colocino

How can consoles match such deals? The answer: they can't come within the same galaxy. I just finished one shopping spree on GoG.com, and now I'm going to do another on GMG.com. PC gaming is almost TOO superior in too many ways.

Yes, but as long as the PC community refuses to pay for software the influx of new software will be stifled. Computers are such a free device, programs easy exploited, and users feel no remorse when pirating software. We have to change as a community and forego taking advantage of the developers and publishers of software we love.

It's cute people keep saying this when the numbers in every study say otherwise.
(For reference, the last accurate count a company gave on a multiplatform release was from Activision, where 10-15% of their market was PC).

This of course ignores the massive PC-exclusive market that is happily doing quite well (we'll even exclude kickstarter from this). Remember that the most profitable game of all time... Is the PC-only World of Warcraft, which has made over 10 billion dollars (according to Activision).

Actually, PC is the largest gaming platform now, and when the next gen of consoles is released, they will already be technologically dated, and resigned to 2nd tier gaming. The specs for next gen consoles are already dated by today's standards. Consoles just can't keep up anymore.
