CD Projekt RED's game based on the Cyberpunk 2020 pen-and-paper RPG is going way into the future. The game will be set in the same world created by Mike Pondsmith, but will be set in the "dark future" of the year 2077. By jumping into the future, players will be able to visit places from 2020 and see how it has been changed over the decades. "Players will have a chance to visit places well known from Cyberpunk 2020, including a combat zone completely taken over by gangs, the legendary Afterlife joint and the nostalgic Forlorn Hope," the announcement details.

Director Mateusz Kanik wrote on the game's new blog about how Cyberpunk was a natural fit for the team after working on The Witcher 2. "While still working on The Witcher 2, we started thinking about creating a huge RPG set in a Sci-Fi world. We wanted to take the universal values we used in the game about Geralt and show them from a different perspective. On top of that, we had plenty of ideas for features that couldn't be implemented in The Witcher simply because they didn't fit in the setting."

Kanik promises that Cyberpunk 2077 will have all the features that made The Witcher 2 so beloved (and Shacknews' Game of the Year). "We would put in place exactly what we've learned while creating The Witcher 2 with just one difference--the game would be set in the future. No elves, no dwarves and no magic."

Andrew Yoon was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

I could understand a game shipping later than planned but being set later than planned is a little odd.

I would :) sure we would clean her up a bit and disable the blade functions first. I have a thing for 7of9, this is no different I think she is edgier, ok maybe things got a little weird just now...

After the way they cast the female cylons in BSG, there's no shame in wanting to bang a robot.

Don't disable the blades. Makes for some interesting foreplay.

        HMmmmMMMMmmMmmm.

Interesting. Odd colour palette, but it might work really well. Cool android arm / blade design as well, stands out from anything I've personally seen before.

That's really god artwork. Kinda scares me but it's cool and fits in nicely with cyber tech. This will probably be a hit.

Oh man. I love that there's a Cyberpunk game in the works, and I'm optimistic that CD Projekt RED is doing it. Never played the pen & paper version, but did play Iron Crown's Cyberspace. I've been wanting a cyber-style rpg for a long time.

You and me both. R. Talsorian captured more of the grittiness. Also, Shadowrun was way too focused on d6s. "OK, roll 8 d6s...OK, roll 6 more d6s...OK, Now I have to roll 17 d6s...OK now all of you roll 4 d6s each."
