The Last of Us developed by Uncharted team
by Andrew Yoon, Dec 11, 2011 1:17am PSTThe Spike TV Video Game Awards took only ten minutes to get to its first big reveal. The Last of Us, the long-teased mysterious PS3 exclusive, is reminiscent of the Dead Island debut trailer, showing a family struggling against monsters in a post-apocalyptic setting. The game is being developed by Naughty Dog, the team best known for their work on the Uncharted franchise.
A girl that "sounds like Haley Joel," according to Garnett and "looks like Ellen Paige" according to Xav appears to be the game's main protagonist. See for yourself:
The PlayStation.Blog has been updated with the game's premise:
The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

The animation is extremely good, but, the artwork they created to serve that animation is deeply flawed. They stacked so much extraneous shader bullshit on the faces that the "humanity" of the characters was significantly lost. Most importantly the eyes, which have so much shadowing and glow/shine/reflection bullshit on them that they lose their whites completely. This is especially egregious on the brunette protagonist, who most of the time just has monkey eyes, with no whites at all.
And very often everyone has weird, plasticy sweat, unfleshy flesh colour (though this is not nearly as bad as it was in Uncharted 1, where they had full on Doom 3 going) and so on.
For that reason Valve, not Naughty Dog is out front in human movement and motion, because they make none of those mistakes and as a result have the most readable characters in games.
