No plans for Dark Souls DLC

DLC haters, rejoice! Demon's Souls successor Dark Souls shan't be receiving any DLC, publisher Namco Bandai has said. DLC lovers and casual admirers, hard luck, I'm afraid.

Do you grind your teeth and clench your fists in fury when downloadable content is announced? Maybe, just maybe, a bitter smile will spread across your twisted face at the news that there are no plans for any Dark Souls DLC at all.

From Software's spiritual successor to Demon's Souls is intended to be a complete and static package, publisher Namco Bandai said in a Gamescom presentation attended by IGN. So no, no DLC.

Your masochistic side will have to make do with the copious amounts of pain and suffering included in the box when Dark Souls arrives for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 4.

On the subject of things which actually are in Dark Souls, here's a look at the Gamescom demo build, in case you missed it last week:

Maybe because it means that they're putting all their content in the game to begin with rather than holding out for more cheddar?

Most DLC is half assed overpriced content that should have been included in the original game... and in many cases it's held back to be sold later.

Well he is partly right. Few devs actually create something that naturally expands the game or makes the original game better. Paid DLC for the most part is your usual over-priced map packs filled with cosmetics.

Then you don't have to pay for it. The DLC being there doesn't make the core game any worse. Except for the rare exception of Dragon Age NPCs who stand there reminding you that you need to buy DLC ˃:[

Which I never do unless it's something full-filling. The dev just stating this openly to the public is to instill confidence they mean to give them a full packaged experience. You saw a bit of that in ME2 as well with the pop-up telling you about it every time you started the game. Still haven't played any of the ME2 DLC since I've read and heard so many mixed things.

This! You can make a decent argument over the merits of the other DLC for ME2, but you are missing out if you do not play Lair of the Shadow Broker. Brilliant mission!

It wouldn't be a DLC thread without someone showing complete ignorance about how DLC actually comes to be created.

Makes sense to have an entire world accessible to everyone with out having to buy DLC to reach new areas.

Means all their effort will be put into the game instead of thinking ahead and deciding what to cut out to make into DLC. I like when DLC is created after the fact and on the behave of how well the original game is received.

I don't understand how this is a good thing at all. If I love a game, I love to get more of that game.

This is like saying "sequel haters rejoice! Dark Souls will be the last game of its kind!"

A lot of DLC is, and a lot of DLC is not. The existence of the former should not make people want ALL DLC to go away.

Mass Effect 2 has some fantastic DLC!

Right! But I see no reason to rejoice when a dev says "there will be no DLC for this awesome game" because now instead of there being a chance of good DLC and a chance of bad DLC, there's no chance of good DLC at all.

It gives us comfort that we will get a complete game without having to spend another $5-$50 to get all the content the game has to offer.

You're getting the same game now whether or not there is any DLC. If they were planning on selling DLC, they would budget for the DLC and create extra content (not strip content out as you seem to think) to be sold as DLC.

With DLC you get more game than you would get without any DLC.

I like that they are selling me a 100% completed game where if I don't buy something later on I'll feel like I'm missing out. I'm not a DLC hater (I've bought plenty) but I also see no reason why every game needs to have it and for a game I'm anticipating as much as Dark Souls I'm glad it won't have it.

Demon's Souls was my favourite game on the ps3 without any DLC and I'm glad everyone who will be playing it on the shack will be on the same page with only what came on the disc.

So if you have a game, and you like that game, and then you complete the game, you're saying that the enjoyment of said game becomes retroactively lessened by the release of future content?

It really is like saying you don't want a sequel to come out because then you will have only bought half the series instead of the whole series.

DLC is not a requirement and a completed game is not a bad thing. Deus Ex, Planescape Torment, Demon's Souls; so many of my favorite games were contained stories. Would I have liked them more with DLC? I doubt it because I appreciated them so much for exactly what they were: completed games.

Also have you played Demon's Souls? It's a game that I think is particularly not suited to DLC. For years after it came out on the shack there was specific discussion (about strategies and levels and enemies) and I'd absolutely loathe it if it ever came to people discussing certain things required having to purchase something to know what they were talking about. That would be a major step backwards for the franchise and the developer recognizes that and made the correct decision.

If only that is the case with the DLC. But most of it is zero day DLC to unlock extra guns and costumes that should have just been in the full game.

You're arguing for the ideal of DLC which most DLC doesn't fall under. You can't sit there and tell me "DLC is great because 2% of it great." We've had some good experience with DLC, however it's such a small percentage. The rest of it feels like nickle and diming; purposely held back content in order to make more money from us or to push exclusive content to different stores. It's not like we've come up to the conclusion that DLC = BAD out of nowhere. It's grounded by some very terrible experiences with DLC to the point that we'd rather just not see it anymore.

No, I'm not arguing for anything. I'm telling you how DLC works, because I actually know how it works. What you are doing is assuming that you know how the business of DLC functions.

You think that in a world without DLC, the content that you currently see in DLC would be in the full game. That is simply not true in any way, shape, or form. There's nothing I can really do to convince you of this so it's not worth arguing. You are wrong and will not be convinced otherwise so let's just go on our separate ways.

The implication is to the effect that, "The entire game experience will be present when you buy the game, with no additional purchases required to fully enjoy the game."

DLC can be awesome, as long as it isn't multiplayer map packs that divide the community.
