Evening Reading

I'm finding my interest in Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer waning pretty quickly. I played CoD4 online for a good 4 months straight, but only played MW2 for around 2 months. Now, I'm not sure how often I'll be jumping back online with Black Ops. This isn't a judgment on the game itself, but rather my preference for the Halo series and the awesomeness that is Reach.

I know the masses of Xbox Live are all up in Call of Duty's business right now, but I hope a lot of people come back to Halo in a bit.

Anyone pick up Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood or Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit?

Agent Poophead, if you are totally new to RTSes and just show up on the ladder one day, or if you really wanna advance through ladders, then you will have a very punishing experience that requires you to really stick with getting your poop pushed for a while till you have a grim castle full of fun!

While I can't argue against that, I think DF is on another level entirely. Hell it's on another planet.

Yep. Starcraft itself isn't terribly hard; beating specific people in direct competition is hard.

Dwarf Fortress is just hard. It's not arbitrary or capricious in it's difficulty. It's not even so much that the game is trying to beat you. There are just a lot of things you have to do and prepare for, and if you don't, well, you lose.

I don't see any difference between the "difficulty" of a multiplayer game and how tough it is to win matches in that game. I think what you're identifying is more about objective complexity (how many discrete aspects of the game there are to manage) than empirical difficulty.

I suppose you could say that in SC2 because of the laddering system, you can always meet people who you can beat easily, as well as people who will rapeify you. But if you wanna actually progress and are looking for harder people - which anyone who plays SC2MP for serious does - then it's pain.

I think StarCraft is pretty complicated. I don't know. Dwarf Fortress seems to be way more in depth than StarCraft but it does give me the same "Oh man this is impossible without a plan" sort of feeling. I only play co-op vs computers in StarCraft, plus the SP campaign and I have a TERRIBLE time doing things at the right time and all that.

I would say that the difference in difficulty is the two is that DF is harder in breadth and SC is more difficult in depth. DF has a million knobs that you have to learn, SC only has 15 but they're deep knobs, which is where my simile falls apart.

      Question for Veterans!

How do you kill a wild animal in a cage trap?
Also, why might no one be brining a caged wild alligator to my animal storage?

      • reply
        November 18, 2010 6:36 PM

I think you have to release the animal in a room and then kill it with soldiers, which can be dangerous

          November 18, 2010 6:38 PM

          From the wiki:

          1) Build the cage with b-j. You can't hook up levers to unbuilt cages so this step is necessary.
          2) Build a lever. It can be built anywhere. I usually put it just outside the Death Chamber, so the puller doesn't have to be physically in the room, and still be close to the cages,
          3) Connect the lever to each cage with a-j.
          4) Move your troops to the room and lock them in.
          5) Pull the lever.

        November 18, 2010 6:56 PM

do you want the trap again? A few ways I handle it:

1.) Dwarf Atom Smasher: Make a draw bridge that raises up and down. Raise draw bridge, put animal under drawbridge. Smash.

2.) Death Chamber: Make a room with a long hallway and fill it with traps. Place cage in room and attach lever and mechanisms to it. Pull lever which you placed OUTSIDE the room and watch as whatever is in the cage runs down the hallway and gets dismembered.

        Question for TroZ from writeup:

bones shells and that sort are damn annoying and the only GOOD way to do it is just to make your stockpiles really specific and only take 1 type of good

        • reply
          November 18, 2010 8:44 PM

you can't use vermin bones as far as I know, but you can craft the bones and shells of larger animals, and make totems from the skulls.

            November 18, 2010 8:46 PM

I asked for bone crafts and requested decorate with bone a number of times during my reign and was often told there wasn't bone. So I was just checking to see if there was something I needed to do to have gotten extra bones.

          • reply
            November 18, 2010 8:46 PM

I believe the dwarfs will collect the bones from a refuse pile, but I usually setup a bone pile eventually.
Similarly, I will also setup a fresh hide pile if I'm going to be doing a lot of butchering, in it's own room with doors do that if one does rot, the miasma doesn't spread far.
bone piles can be out in the open as they don't rot.

How important is it? I haven't ever gotten that far and I wasn't aware of the wear/use stuff. I know the point of each year summary is to make fun of those who came before, but I'm curious as to the cloth setup.

just like the quality of items (-, +, *, etc) clothes get marked with x, X, XX as they wear out. I think at X and XX they start the generate negative thoughts, which can be seen this the z:status - view thoughts and preferences screen. Enough negative thoughts and you can get a dwarf throwing a fit. With the deaths that already occurred and the ones that I was sure to come under my rule, I want the get a jump on the problem. The clothes were only at x (first level) so it wan't an issue yet.
I actually didn't get to making any clothes. But I set up a loom, a clothes shop, and a dyer's shop together in one room with a cloth stockpile. I believe finished clothes are 'finished goods' and that dwarfs that need clothes will just take them when needed, at least before the economy starts up. Once economy kicks in, you need to set up a few shops, and one should be designates the clothes shop.
