Morning Discussion
by Xav de Matos, Sep 07, 2010 5:00am PDTThis week should prove interesting as I woke up to realize I had, somehow, caught the PAX Nerd Flu. Apparently, covering the event remotely is now enough to catch the deadly disease.
Stay tuned this week for the conclusion of Shack's PAX Prime 2010 coverage, our impressions of PlayStation Move along with its launch titles, and more.
In the meantime, how was your weekend?

So far, they are touting the 'free' aspect of the game pretty heavily. It remains to be seen as this is targeted for a late 2011 launch.

Late to the game I know, but finally beat this over the weekend. Was very fun, but...
- Felt more "button-mash friendly" than the first one did, which really rewarded you for proper use of combos, blocks, counter attacks, etc, and brutally punished you for trying to faceroll it
- The bosses were either "WTF" hard or "my daughter could do this" easy
- All the scrolls and shit you pick up are a total waste of reading - they don't fit into the gameplay in anyway
- I was kind of hoping for another "wooden sword > Unlabored Flawlessness" type of weapon, although some of the other new weapons were very fun to use (Tonfa \m/)
What did you guys think (if you remember) of the game?

Tomorrow is the day when those that already have accounts can start playing for free! I'm excited and am hoping to see a lot of old LOTRO friends back in the game. For everyone else, Free to Play starts on Friday.
The shack kinship is on the Silverlode server, and its called Ghosts of Gladden Fields.

As I was playing through the demo again last night, I frequently had to pause the game and look around behind me to make sure no one was sneaking up to do me in. :( I don't know who would, but I was scared enough to think maybe it was my guinea pig. She was looking at me askance and I got really freaked out, until I remember that that's how guinea pigs look at everybody.

So I am one of those players that has never given RTS multiplayer a shot and I completely fucking suck balls. It is awful. I am of course playing it safe and playing Terran; however I can't seem to keep up with the pace.
My average APM is 30 for fucks sake :( that said it was 19 yesterday. I know APM ain't everything though and can't outdo a solid strategy, so what should I be focused on?

I wanted to call it ShackCon 2011: Shacknews Duke Nukem Release Party, but got shot down :P
http://bit.ly/ShackConSurvey2
Over the holiday weekend we got over 200 responses! that's great, keep 'em coming!
To clear up some details :
- This will be a weekend/long weekend (Friday-Sunday) event.
- It will be held in Las Vegas.
- It's looking like it will be in the Summer of 2011, specifically June or July, based on results from both survey 1 and 2. Yeah, we have no idea when DNF is coming out, but this'll be an event celebrating the shack and the Duke. Also, we'd like to have it when a lot of people can attend.
- The main event will probably be some sort of large dinner banquet and party on Saturday night.
- The rest of the weekend will be filled with options based on survey results and also based on the number of registrants. We aren't going to over-plan your weekend for you, but we do want to make sure that people have the option to do different things, and we want to make it as convenient as possible to do them.
-Really guys? You want a LAN Party type thing going on? You guys realize we'll be in Las Vegas right, not Dallas? :P
- It's gonna 0wn.

I want to thank the Shackers who participated in our games on Friday, Sunday, and Monday nights! They were an absolute blast and I'm glad we had the opportunity to do this. Each night we ran this we had between 16 and 22 or more shackers playing, which made for some really fun games. Coordination in the Teamspeak channels on the teams I played on was outstanding, and even if we were on the losing side, it still felt like we were working together.
So, what's next? More games, obviously! Given that Thursday night is the Drunken version of our game (and thus the server will be occupied) let's try to set up one or two nights a week that work for a majority.

This is something every iPod since fucking eternity could do, but they never allowed it on the fucking iPhone. Now I don't need to copy my damn music library to my work computer, I can play it directly through iTunes from my phone.

I'm talking about operating system incompatabilities, outdated software, etc.. preventing you from playing certain games like you used to.
I'd love to be able to play Dungeon Keeper on Windows 7 64 bit but I'm sick of trying all the hacks, tricks, dodgy programs and workarounds, as they're all pretty useless.

I've made my first phone purchase in a few years and picked up the Samsung Epic for Sprint this weekend.
So far I'm extremely pleased with it. I'm honestly whoring out the 30-day trial period Sprint has. The biggest complaint I've heard is battery life and GPS. So far my GPS seems to be working fine and battery life seems fine. Yesterday after five hours of use I had 80% battery left on it. We'll see how it goes today.
Anyone else trying out the Epic?

Despite the PC’s unassailable status as undying gaming platform with an uncountable number of titles in its history, the exciting/chilling march of operating system progress has seen successive versions of Windows cruelly dispense with support for the golden, vital past. Most recently, the otherwise fairly splendid Windows 7 threw out Direct Draw support, leaving a slew of Windows 95-era games left in the emulation cold. A man has fixed this, and thus you should worship him.
Finnish software engineer Jari Komppa was dismayed to discover that the earlier Wing Commander games – most especially the first one – went all kinds of wrong in Windows 7, either screwing up the palette or making the rest of the OS look all screwy. For Reasons Too Complicated To Explain involving DirectX’s attitude to and emulation of OpenGL, he’s been able to fix this.
Not sure if anyone's tried this, and the usual caveats apply, but if it works, it sounds awesome. I never did have a chance to get into PC gaming back in the late 90's beyond the Doom and Quake series, because I either didn't have a PC, or didn't have the money or opportunity to go PC game shopping.
