Evening Reading: 2010 IGF Voting Complete
by Garnett Lee, Feb 15, 2010 6:00pm PSTI spent most of this holiday Monday playing and judging the finalist games in the IGF main competition. When you have some time I highly recommend checking out the nominees. A number of them have free demos, some also have paid full versions that aren't particularly expensive, and at the very least you will find videos of the game in action.
Indie games get more exposure now than ever before but they're really something you need to experience. Whether a conventional design, such as the popular run of indie platformers of late, or something more abstract, the small -- at times one-person -- teams putting the games together put you as the player as close to the designer as possible. When they work the result is an unrivaled sense of pure connection with the game.
We figured on a fairly quiet day today but there were a few goings-on:
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012

I don't know what I think about the actual usability of the layout on the homescreen, but it sure is pretty. I'm looking forward to seeing what type of hardware they'll put the OS on.

Im asking because I picked up an XFX 5770 about 2 weeks ago after my 8800GTX died, and i hate this card. It randomly crashes and hardlocks my system while playing any number of video games. I did some research and apparently it is a well documented issue with ATI 5xxx series of cards and the catalyst drivers and I just want this computer to work. All I play on it is TF2, HoN, L4D2 and a couple other games which aren't very graphically taxing. My price point is around 200$, and while i'm aware that the 5770 can't really be beat, i'd pay a little more and take 10 less FPS just to have a product that works like it is supposed to.

A couple of things:
- What happens if I run about of fuel? Does help arrive, or do I gotta spacewalk back to a Mass Relay with a gas can?
- Every time someone posts about scanning, there are two or three inevitable "you can probe Uranus LOLOLOLOL!" posts. Then I realized you actually COULD because our solar system is on the game. I was disappointed to discover that Uranus was depleted, however. I'd hoped to extract a rich bounty from it!

BlackCat and I are about to do our third week three run, and the reality of week four is staring at us in the face. I'm not sure of how you are just supposed to be able to go from 9 minutes of running (at week 3) to 16 minutes of running in one go.
Are there any tricks we should do? Should I make a week 3.5 routine, where we do nothing but 3minute run segments? This just seems like a giant wall that we are going to run into in a couple of days.

Apparently the human brain is really good at remembering certain basic functions. If you try to pour salt from an imaginary shaker onto your tongue, you'll actually start to taste it

He was pretty Abrasion about it, but lets not let that take away from the conversation. My counter-point: Personally, I don't see what is wrong with this attitude at all. In fact, I think when trying to create a high level production, it is a sometimes necessary attitude to hold. If you have a clear vision of what you want to do, and what you want out of it, then there is no reason to pay attention to what your competitor is doing.
Teams can very easily be distracted by doing such a thing, and start second guessing their own objectives and ambition when they bother with competition too much. Calling this behavior "arrogant" is misguided. When you are creating something at the highest level in that particular domain, then you need to keep doing what you've been doing. Only when you start to fall behind should you start wondering what it is that you don't know, that someone else might.
