Evening Reading: Putting the Oughts to Bed
by Garnett Lee, Dec 31, 2009 6:00pm PSTIf you'd told me last New Year's Eve that a year later I'd be writing the last Evening Reading of the decade on Shacknews I'd probably have looked at you dumbfounded. Sitting here doing it this evening I couldn't be more pleased with how things have worked out. Getting reacquainted with Shack has been great. We've got a great team, a great community, and fantastic support to carry us into 2010 and well beyond.
We've been posting our games to look forward to in 2010 today. I'll have mine coming tomorrow along with a collection of our resolutions for the New Year. Hope you'll take a moment to check them out and add to the conversation when time allows. Have a fun and safe New Year's Eve whatever your celebration plans.
I'll leave you with this great quote my friend Sterling tweeted earlier today: "The world isn't coming to an end. It's already tomorrow in Australia."

I think mine was Borderlands. Maybe it was partially my fault for thinking the game was going to be something it never was or not keeping up with the latest news about the game before release.
As a rule, I try to go on media blackouts for games I'm really looking forward to. After seeing the E3 video with Randy explaining the bazillion gun combinations in addition to the game being a co-op post apocalyptic Action/RPG for the PC no less I instantly put it on the buy list and began the blackout. I assumed the game would be similar to an Action/RPG where you could customize a character you created with gear/armor in addition to the "bazillion" guns rather than just choosing a pre-generated character.
In the end it felt like a single player MMORPG with no real story, and the "storyline" they do set you up on has a big f' you ending. 95% of the bazillion guns were horrible and boiled down to finding a new gun with 1-2 more damage that shoots a different color. Just trying to get into a multiplayer game was a joke. The UI was atrocious to navigate and sometimes even to look at. Where's v-sync? I'm not editing any .ini files for stuff that should be in the game to start with.
I guess on the bright side it wasn't as bad as Hellgate: London. I'll give it another chance after a couple of patches.

What they needed to do was completely redo T4 RvR. Make the zones way, way bigger. Have castles, forts and towers that could be permanently owned by guilds. Put resources in these rvr zones that are needed to build or maintain/repair buildings and items or even provide bonuses to the campaign.
Instead we have tiny little zones where you face the same enemy every day, and that keep you just captured is not going to be yours in an hour so who gives a fuck im not defending it.
