Evening Reading
by Nick Breckon, Mar 06, 2009 4:01pm PSTMy technical problems with Empire: Total War continue. After slogging through two minute AI turns on a top-of-the-line PC, I made it to turn 118, at which point the game crashed. "Oh well," I thought, as anyone who enjoys brilliant, technically-flawed PC games has said before. But of course my pain didn't stop there.
After getting back into the game, I hit the "end turn" button--only to find that the game had crashed again, at the same point during the Huron Confederacy's turn. After around 12 hours spent campaigning as the British, my progress has been completely halted by a bug that won't be fixed until next week, and perhaps not even then.

So guys, give me your personal endorsements. For now, I'd say my absolute price limit is ~$300, since I'm kind of starting where the Logitech Z-5500 is priced. And I must say, I like that it comes with a remote.

Kind of reminds me about this philosophy joke:
An engineer, a scientist, a mathematician, and a philosopher are hiking through the hills of Scotland, when they see a lone black sheep in a field.
The engineer says, "What do you know, it looks like the sheep around here are black." The scientist looks at him skeptically and replies, "Well, at least some of them are." The mathematician considers this for a moment and replies, "Well, at least one of them is." Then the philosopher turns to them and says, "Well, at least on one side."

Gegtik and myself finally collided, and walked away 3-3. There is unfinished business to be had here.
Rgoer and myself had 9 fierce, mostly close battles, whereas I walked away up 5-4 for lunch. This man has a sick Guile, took my Balrog to school.

We pushed a dev channel update with tons of good stuff last night. Full notes at http://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/dev/getting-involved/dev-channel/release-notes , but here's the highlights:
* Working towards better, faster proxy auto-config support (not yet on by default, use --v8-proxy-resolver to try)
* Fullscreen mode UI and tons of fullscreen mode fixes
* Updated spellcheck disctionaries for French and Polish
* Allow Flash to pop up windows if the user explicitly initiates it
* Make accelerators work in interstitial pages
* Slightly less busted middle-mouse autoscroll cursor positioning
* Make alt-f4 work in App windows
* Fix invisible window problems when loading links from Windows Live Messenger
* Don't allow popup titlebars to appear underneath the taskbar
* Fix many transparency issues, e.g. semi-transparent PNG problems
* Support NTLM authentication (but not yet auto-logon)
* Support dynamically disabling/enabling the DWM ("glass") on Vista Aero. Now if you turn glass on/off, or if you have it on but remote desktop in to your computer, Chrome's UI switches to the non-glass appearance automatically.
* Opening a <select> on a page shouldn't deactivate the main window
* Windows no longer hide auto-hide taskbars (at least, not worse than Firefox)
* Various V8 fixes
* Many crash fixes
We're working towards pushing something to the Beta channel (finally!) since Dev is at last becoming stable enough to go there (crash numbers within 10% of the last stable release, P1 bugs dropping toward 0, layout test regressions mostly fixed). Either this release or our next Dev release should hopefully be pushed to Beta in a few days, so if you've been holding off on the Dev channel because you think it's too flaky, feel free to switch to Beta and prepare for some good stuff.

Rangemeet: Sailor of Fortune is organizing a shooting range Preshackmeet Shackmeet Rangemeet the same day! So those that want to shoot some guns, or learn to shoot some guns, can go to his Shackmeet in Richmond during the day, and then finish off the day with my Shackmeet. There will likely be a few hours between leaving the range and meeting at Moylan's, so anyone going to both is welcome to hang out at my place in the interim.

in C# i could do something like:
foreach (GameScreen screen in screensArray)
screen.update();
in C++, when I try to do this it will always call the base classes update call, never the derived class. Whats this called so I can read up on how to do this correctly in C++? Basically, i want to do something like:
list<GameScreen>::iterator screen;
for (screen = screens->begin(); screen != screens->end(); ++screen)
screen->update(); // I want this to call the derived classes update method
The only problem is the derived calss could be of several other classes.. (mainGame, Paused, TitleScreen, etc)

Apparently there is time travel in this one - surprise - but that's what explains the changes that were made. Patrick Stewart is apparently in the movie as Picard for a short time in the beginning, and Nero travels back in time - hence the giant wormhole in the trailer with the ship coming out of it and his quote "kirk was a great man, but that was another life" line. sounds awesome to me

I ordered 2 tubs of protein yesterday afternoon with 3-5 day standard shipping and it arrived...TODAY. Either they are hiding a distribution center in the woods behind my house, or they've kidnapped Santa Claus and have enslaved him into being their delivery man. Seeing that shipping box sitting outside of my house when I went to take out the trash was like a little Christmas :(

I had Steam start downloading before I went to bed. When I get up this morning its at 0%! Now its downloading very sporadically at no greater than 80k/s. There are 1.1 days left in the trial and I'm guessing it won't even be halfway finished by then. Way to go Steam/Epic. You've guaranteed I will never buy UT3. Not even for $12.99
