by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Feb 19, 2008 10:38pm PSTWhats up Shackers? The middle of the week seems to be treating you well, did you lose a few pounds? Looking good. GDC is ticking away, and so plenty of interesting news coming in such as the big announcement of the PC Gaming Alliance, and actual impressions of Too Human. And failing all other forms of amusement, you could make a flip-book of Mario Kart Wii screenshots.

Due to the misinformation some of you seem to have about what RSS does and why you should or shouldn't use it, I thought I would take this time to write a little handy dandy post to maybe inform some of you, and possibly get some of you to use RSS or give them another try.
Let me first and foremost say, using RSS does not mean I don't end up visiting that site. I do. It does allow me to find (or skip) information quickly.
Google Reader is very good, and I will probably refer to it when I talk about some RSS reader specifics, if you already have a Google account you can setup a reader account at http://reader.google.com/ and if you don't already have a favorite RSS reader, then I would strongly suggest you use Google's.
Here you can see the basic layout of Google Reader:
http://shackpics.com/files/googlereader1_xde0uuve13mskp7nng6d.jpg
And here you can see what I see reading posts:
http://shackpics.com/files/googlereader2_iqj11kb5u0vhmv79wzt2.jpg
Obviously I am not getting just a sentence from the site. However, some sites don't include the whole post in their feed, only a teaser. Typically for these sites, by either the headline or the teaser I can tell if I want to go ahead and read the rest of the post. Most sites if the headline is interesting, and the first of the post is as well, I will open that post in a new tab (middle click the headline) and continue down the reading pane. As you pass a post, it marks it as read. You can also mark everything as read if you don't care or don't want to "catch up" I will sometimes do this for some of my "folders" of things I don't care to read a backlog of, namely weather and shack NWS, INF+, etc posts.
There is a way to quickly add feeds, and I like organizing feeds into folders. That way if I don't give a fuck about all the political stuff that happened over night, I will just mark the whole politics folder as read and move on.
Granted, RSS is not for everyone. I don't think I could live without it because I use it to pull in news, posts, and information from so many sites I don't even want to think about visiting each one on a daily basis to see what's new. Some sites have new content daily, or hourly. Some every few days or weeks.
Now, most of you who read this and made a new Reader account probably need some feeds to start playing with. Might I suggest these as adds to your reader:

A new one came out which is quite similar to OGame but a old greek setting.

A new world just opened up today, Epsilon.
I have played the last couple days on Delta, built up some sling throwers and ransacked some towns. It's basically like OGame yet you can occupy enemy settlements, which make things quite more interesting. Plus battling over islands for resources.
I know it was impossible to gain dominance in OGame, but this server opened today - also is the first non beta server.

Except 2 hours ago, I took one of my bikes off the hook to trade the pedals onto the time trial bike. While lifting the bike to put t back on the ceiling hook, my back began to hurt, and I couldn't lift the bike high enough. Thinking it was a single incident, I tried again, and could not lift it at all.
I am now left laying on the couch, watching invader zim hoping the pain goes away within the next 8 hours and does not return. There's no likelyhood of this happening, is there? I'm too young for this to happen.
GENIUS!

I've seen alot of threads lately talking about searching to the ends of the Earth for a 60GB PS3 just because "it has PS2 functionality."
Let's summarize the backwards compatibility of the PS3 lineup.
20GB model (discontinued): Hardware PS2 support
40GB model: MINIMIAL PS2 support (allegedly can be done via future system updates but probably not worth the wait)
60GB model (discontinued): Hardware PS2 support
80GB model (probably discontinued now): Software PS2 support
120GB model (TBD): Software PS2 support? (Not entirely sure of all the details of this model)
Apparently, all models do PS1 games.
So, as you can see, the "previous generation" PS3s, the 20GB and 60GB, offer "full" PS2 emulation using actual embedded PS2 hardware. The 80GB has some PS2 hardware but does the rest of it with software stand-in. However, don't take "software emulation" to mean "crappy emulation." The software emulation can be updated over time through system updates, and will likely be more frequently updated than the emulation on the 40GB, because the 40GB has no PS2 hardware in it whatsoever.
I haven't had any problems with PS2 games yet on the 80GB model, and in fact the games I've played have run on the whole better than they've run on the PS2. Less/no slowdown, and some games look great resampled. If you are concerned about game compatibility or whether your games will work well, check out http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus and find out from the source!
The 20GB and 60GB models are discontinued so unless you really want to hunt one down, I'd suggest just going for at least the 80GB model. Unfortunately, the 80GB was recently abandoned by Best Buy (and might be discontinued) so even that is getting a bit rare. I haven't tuned into the features of the 120GB but I think it will have the 80GB's emulation capabilities. If anyone can elaborate or confirm this, that might be helpful to our PS3-searching souls.
In conclusion, the PS3 is a land of contrast, but hunting down the last 60GB models in existence is probably not worth the effort if your main concern is PS2 emulation.

An xbox magazine said they were going to have mega-exclusive news on a game next month and they released pieces of a screenshot.

Someone then noticed it's similarity to yet another screenshot:

Those two screenshots were then combined resulting in this:

It is interesting to say the least.

Daily Audiosurf Shacker Challenge
Since a lot of us have audiosurf I figure it would be good if we had a daily song that we can all compete on.
A few simple rules:
* The winner gets to nominate the next track.
* Obviously we don't all have the same music so your choice has to be relatively mainstream (in terms of the shack's musical taste anyway). I believe there's a shack last.fm group so maybe we could use that for reference? You could alternatively provide free (or shacker produced!) music. I believe sharing gaming music is allowed under the rules as well.
* It's probably simplest if we restrict everything to the Elite cars for now. Maybe we could have a Pro category as well if there's demand for it.
* When posting your score note your audiosurf username, score and car type. Use ThomW's gamewith.us to keep track of shackers usernames: http://shackers.gamewith.us/finder/audiosurf
Bean nominated Beastie Boys - Sabotage as the first track, which is fittingly awesome. skankcore is currently leading with 51,805 using Ninja Mono.
I figure we'll make the cut off point for submitting new scores when the next MD is posted. It's currently 1:30 am here so I can't always be the one creating these threads - anyone want to help me out? Maybe we can do a bunch of songs on weekends as well. Feel free to post any other suggestions.

Something happened on PTR yesterday, and I dont don't really get it, or know what's going on. I guess they are changing Priest PI, and the Priest forums are filled with 11>31 posts but I can't figure out wtf 11 is.

Ok, I'm totally hooked on this, but now I'm questioning things not covered in the strategy guide.
#1 What are the blocks with long lines thru them?
#2 What are the blocks with down arrows above them?
#3) What does the spacebar do for the Pointman ship? It says hold for hint, but I dont see anything special.
#4) How do you earn a stealth achievements?

Best way to describe it, is a really good long episode of the X-Files (more family friendly though, unfortunately). One of the better things I've seen on tv in recent years, it's a shame I didn't stumble upon it until recently.

Are there any extensions that work? I used to use Foxmarks but the new version is bloated as hell and *still* not compatible with FF3 beta. I love FF3 too much to switch back-- there's gotta be something out there. Google Browser Sync doesn't seem to be compatible either?

Five free MMOs. I've tried Shaiya and so far it's decent. I dicked around with Dream of Mirror Online a bit, and it's annoying for me. Might not be for you. Haven't looked at the others just yet. Shaiya is more of the EQ2/WoW/Guild Wars type, with the running around, killing, quests and whatnot. Dream of Mirror Online is apparently based off of relationships. You can have enemies, lovers, friends, and if you find your 'match' that the game creates for you, you get better stats, or something like that. Same thing with friends. Your enemy isn't necessarily an evil person, just someone that keeps you pushing forward. Or some gay shit like that.
Looks like they have four fantasy-based ones (one of them being martial-arts focused) and a racing MMO. The next one I might try is Last Chaos.
I really just want to find something that has decent crafting. I'm aiming to become the best cook/tailor this side of the internet. (Call me weird, but I really liked the way Horizons had with crafting and tradeskills.)
