    repost

I saw Death Proof and Planet Terror back to back last night (cunning way of getting 2x the ticket price) in Leicester Square, London.

Death Proof was a bit long winded (It was the extended/re-cut standalone version). I certainly enjoyed it and Tarantino is just a master of dialogue. I particularly enjoyed all the little nod's to his previous films. oh yeah, the big crash was amazing, the tire to the face was brutal!

Planet Terror was off the fucking chain! So much gore and HOT WOMEN! I loved it. Again I saw the re-cut standalone version, but unlike Death Proof, it didn't feel drawn out, there was never a dull moment. A+ would see again.

Overall, I think they would have been better in their original US theatrical state rather than as 2 completely separate movies. Death Proof in particular seemed over-long and I felt slightly ripped off having to pay to 2x the amount.

I *hated* Death Proof and it destroyed any remaining respect I had for Tarantino. Planet Terror was great, though.

People either really liked or really hated Death Proof. Don't worry, they will all tell you how wrong you are (no matter what your view is) below

I thought it was ok. Can't say I loved or hated it. I wouldn't recommended it as a standalone film. Having not seen the US cinema version I'd be interested to know what was added for the standalone version I saw.

I thought it was decent - but long.

        I saw the extended cut.

There were bits I liked, and bits that I was "eh" about.

I guess, I'm disappointed that I don't feel terribly strongly about it :(

I haven't seen Planet Terror yet (but I want to) and Death Proof was pretty drawn out and anti-climatic I thought. Half the movie was these girls driving around in a car chatting.

I think the whole film was about the talking. It was not at all about the story line. It was like a shaggy dog story without the punchline - the entertainment was in the way it was told rather than the events themselves.

Tarantino's dialogue inevitably feels stilted and artificial to me now, like it's trying to be hip and clever without actually succeeding. Since this movie is so dialogue-heavy, it fails.

I think the dialogue (as crappy as I think it is) builds the tension to the final action, but it could have been shaved down a bit. My god it was tedious.

I think the trick to good Tarantino dialogue is having actors or actresses that can naturally express it. If you look at the opening scenes of both Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, the talent makes the dialogue come to life naturally. With the round table scene in Death Proof (quite the homage to Resevoir Dogs), however, the actresses just aren't good enough to make the dialogue interesting and real. To me, this is the real issue.

Heh - looking at it that way - I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Comparing the way the dialogue in Death Proof was delivered by its actors, to how the dialogue was delivered in Resevoir Dogs with Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Chris Penn etc it seems to me that maybe the actors weren't doing the material the justice that could have been done...

Rosario Dawson is great, though :D

This is probably true, but given that Tarantino essentially had total creative control over Death Proof, this is still his fault. He should have cast better or directed better.

Tarantino himself completely fucking ruins the opening dialogue in Reservoir Dogs for me. He's such an intensely unnatural, awkward, obnoxious actor. He has no sense of restraint, delivery, or tone. I can't stand to see him in any film, he needs to stay the fuck out of his own movies. He's a great director, and he should stick to that.

I don't care how much the talking bored me, he did REAL stunts in this risk-averse movie making era. He gets my respect for that alone.

I'm one of the apparent few that felt the other way around. I liked Death Proof quite a bit, I actually like scenes where people talk even when (and sometimes especially because) it has nothing to do with the plot. I liked how there were 2 separate sets of characters, and I liked the ridiculous ending. That said, I've seen both the theatrical and extended versions and I did feel that the extended one overstayed its welcome.

Planet Terror was supposed to be sooooo shocking but by trying so hard to be over-the-top 100% of the time it's like it went into negative-shock territory. Everything that happened in that movie was blatantly obvious and there was no surprise or shock to be had at all. Maybe it was because of the way it was marketed, but that movie seriously carried very little entertainment value for me. The women were hot, and I liked some of the talky bits like the brothers feuding about the barbecue recipe or whatever that was, but all the EXTREEEEEME stuff was telegraphed beyond belief and pretty lame.

Shocking? I didn't think that's what they were going for at all. I thought they were going for hilarious over the top gore and action.

I like Death Proof because Kurt Russell owns the screen time. I really didn't like the ending of the movie but it was enjoyable.

Planet Terror had it's moments and a few good lines, but overall I prefer Death proof. They are both good in ways.

They made Death Proof longer?! Ugh. PT was fucking awesome, but DP was the nail in the coffin for Tarantino in my book.

what was the leadup to the coffin? kill bill was great. Jackie Brown was interesting. Pulp Fiction and RDs a classic. So, one movie you don't care for and he's dead to you?
