It's about the time of day for a fresh chatty, it should pair nicely with bagels and cream cheese. Looks like we'll have some contest results for you later for everyone that channeled their inner Lord Byron. So I was getting some Disgaea 2 in last night and it made me think about games that addressed or recognized the fourth wall. Disgaea is pretty much built on player exploitation of the game mechanics, Shadowrun was built around the notion of FPS hacks, and some games talk directly to the player. Any other games make you think of this?

  • Career decisions

I am having a hell of a time figuring out what I want to pursue as a career. I just got laid off and to be honest I am sick of phones and helping people over the phone. My last job was doing system administrator, desktop support, jack of every damn thing. I like fixing problems but I want to fix them in person or have control over the problem being fixed.

I was thinking about programming or working with Cisco routers. At my last job I got exposed to configuring Dell 2691s, Netvanta 3205s, and troubleshooting frame and DSL connections. I like that form of control over hardware. Once you figure out where the problem is and if your provider is lying to you or giving you the wrong information then working with routers isn’t too bad on the LAN and private network sides. Connecting metropolitans doesn’t sound like fun and more like a pathway to excessive drinking and smoking.

I wouldn’t mind doing desktop support again but you cap out on salary fast. Senior system administrator would be the next step if I pursued that path again. You just cant make much money doing desktop support forever and unless if you work in a shop where the team transitions people into positions with more responsibility and pay then you are pretty much stuck at a salary cap. As a "mighty" system administrator you can move on to other things more easily when attempting to work for other companies and in doing so make a little bit more chump change.

Working with Databases seems like it might be a possible interest. I see shackers talk about the problems and as hellish as those problems sound I *think* i could deal with them.

I don't expect to become a master over night and just take off working on any of those possibilities.

I am trying my best to stay in the IT field. I like learning and playing with technologies but if you end up getting a job out of IT field then it is a bitch to get back in.

I had a phone interview yesterday for a position that was titled "System Administrator". After talking to the guy it turns out the job was very AS/400 heavy and there was very little chance of working in a Microsoft environment or doing any kind of desktop support work. I do have AS/400 experience, it was part of my last job but that moves away from trying to stay current with the technology is out now and what will be arriving in the future.

Please give an opinion on your current career choice and the reason(s) you may one day say "Fuck you, Fuck you, You're Cool, and Fuck you. I'm Out."
